Cross Breeds

What is your favourite cross breed of dog?

Because pure breds have so many problems I'm wondering what your favourite cross breed is and/or mutt? Just FYI pure bred dogs do tend to have more health problems because they are increasingly in bred to keep the purity in the line.

1. Any dog can have health problems, but from my experience, mutts do make damn good dogs. I personally like the Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, I babysit one & she is a great dog all around. I pretty much like all dogs though, mutts & purebreds. I get TD for my opinion, how immature can you get.

3. Definitely a Ba-Shar (also called a Sharp-Asset). It's a mix of a chinese Shar-pei (the ones that are just a giant ball of wrinkles) and a Basset Hound. They are absolutely adorable. Most of them as puppies look like a shar-pei, but lean up as they grow and in adulthood they are surprisingly athletic dogs. 4. Well, being pure bred does not mean they are more or less prone to health disorders. It is a matter of genetics inherited by dog's parents. Therefore, mix breeds are equally likely to inherit health problems from parents with genetic disorders.
5. Italian Mastiff and Pit Bull cross. Edit: I love this mix because this is what my dog is, and I adopted her from the Humane Society........so screw you thumb downers.
6. I like either a cross of Boston Terrier & Boston Terrier or a cross between a mutt and a mutt. Both make beautiful dogs.
7. Actually, well-bred purebred dogs are healthier then mutts. Responsible breeders don't just breed just because the pups would be cute or for the money, as most mutt breeders do. Responsible breeders test for genetic diseases in the parents to make sure that they are not passing any problems on to the offspring. They also only breed to better the breed. Purebreds all have individual 'uses' that they were originally bred for. Good breeders often compete with there dogs in trials. However. bad breeders do not test the parents, so the offspring gets the worst of both breeds. For example, my German Shepherd/Husky mutt that I rescued from an irresponsible owner, could have inherited hip and elbow dysplasia from both parents, just because her breeders did not breed responsibly. So, I do not have a favorite kind of mutt; just one who doesn't have a lot of health problems and was adopted from a shelter.
8. Cross breds COME from crossing purebreds - so whatever inherited health problems the purebred has, it can pass onto the cross. The only reason people ascribe a certain genetic or inherited disease/health issue to purebreds, is because there is a way to document it. But, there is little to no documentation on health issues of crossbreds - because that would be nearly impossible given all the variables. Personally, I have owned and love mutts too. I've had some really great ones. But, I had a Collie X (don't know what other breeds were involved), who developed hip dysplasia. And a Poodle X who had asthma. But, I can't ascribe those diseases to all cross breds because there are few other exact replicas of my dogs. So, crossbreds are NOT more healthy. It is generally good breeding that helps to reduce or eliminate inherited/genetic traits in dogs and a little "luck of the draw."
9. The mixed breed dogs have become so popular the past couple of years. They are hypoallergenic, shed very little and don't have as many of the health problems that occur with pure breed dogs. I have pure breeds and 1 mix breed dog. He is a Yorkie-Poodle mix breed dog. He's a beautiful, smart and loving dog. My favorite in the small mix breed dogs is the Yorkie-Poodle. I like the mix of colors, where the dog has browns, tan, blonde and black hair, like with Yorkies. The larger breed dogs, I like the Labradoodle and the Cockapoo. 10. I have Lab/Rott male right now. Would never have deliberately set out to look for a Rott because I was not as opened minded as I should have been. But this little guy at 4 weeks old just had something special. Right now he is 9 months and I have to say he is the most special dog. He has the best personality traits of each breed. He has opened my eyes to the fallacies of breed-specific generalizations. Yes, he will possibly have the worst of the health problems of both breeds, but he will not mate and pass those along and I adopt for family pets only. edit- hey! I want fancy names too! I am calling mine a Rottador. or maybe a Labraweiller?
11. I can't pick a favorite cross, because every dog is different. I've owned the following mixed breed dogs: Passed on German Shepherd/Lab (M)- Buddy Blue Heeler/Collie (F)- Diamond Border Collie/Blue Heller/Black Lab (F)-Juliette German Shepherd/Terrier (F)-Mazley Currently with me Great Pyrenees/Collie/other (M)-Patches Patches/Husky/German Shepherd/other (F) Sasha (Patches' daughter) I also currently own 2 purebred dogs Dalmatian (M)- Nitro "Mini" Australian Shepherd (F)- Rain The best behaved dog was Buddy, maybe because we were his forth home and we got him when he was approximately 6 years old, he died of cancer when he was around 13 years old. Not all purebreds have problems. I also HATE when people have to give their mutts "designer" breed names! Sometimes it's harder to figure out what breeds a dog is when they use a "fancy" name instead of just saying what mix the dog is.
12. Mutts have problems too, specially when they are bred by BYBs. It's a thought decision because all mutts are diferent, even if they are the same cross! But I'd say that my dog is my favourite cross breed (tricky answer!) Her name is Pattie and she's a mix of a bit everything. I believe she has a strong standard poodle side though... 13. I dont have a favorite mutt. I like health tested proven purebred dogs.
14. I prefer mutts that are fixed. But if I'm looking for a healthy dog with the personality I want, I go for a well-bred purebred.
15. Well health problems can happen to any breed whether they're mixed or not. But my favorite mix I've seen so far has been one I call "Baby". I found her at an Amish farm. She is a mix between an Australian Shepherd and a Blue Heeler. The farmer was going to take her to the shelter because she was too much for him to manage. Out of the 5 pups his dog had given birth to she was the most hyper and unmanageable for him so I took her and worked with her. She turned out to be one of the hardest and best dogs I have ever worked with and is now living happily on a sheep farm where she can do what her breeds were meant to do....herd animals.
16. I think you need to go back in your basement hun, Mutts are NOT healthier than purebreds. I have had purebreds all my life and when you buy from a responsible breeder, you don't have health problems. Mixed breeds? They are not health tested so you have no idea what you're getting into. Personally? I'd much rather have some of the predictability that comes with a purebred. Give me a purebred from a show breeder ANY DAY!!
