What do you think of this crazy high profile dog on house basing issue?
We have an american bulldog, and they are not based on air force bases. The housing people saw him and have no problem acknowledging the fact he isn't a pit bull, we have all proper documentation of that. We routed this memo and it is on its third commander, a full bird. Our memo had everything we needed, pics, registration pictures, vet declaration, genealogist statement about how they are not pit bulls, etc etc. The previous two commanders concur he is not banned and should be allowed on base. Well, this might affect the whole military now. In this our base discovered we had the smallest list of dogs banned on base and so we must be like the others and ban more. American bulldog might fall into this new policy and also at other bases now as well. That is with no good reason we can figure out, just because maybe they see they will be a breed hard to tell apart from a pit. ( a pit is terrier, an american bulldog is not, similar, but not the same dog). this commander is so scared to make the call on this because it will become policy, and so this has gone very, very far above his head so he can make sure he doing the right thing. the bottom line is this breed is not banned, so we should be allowed to have him on base, but now, it looks that we might have made things worse for dogs at other bases as well as ours in finding some bases have very strict policies, such as hickam not allowing german shepherds, and some bases not allowing dogs over a certain weight. So thanks to us, there is a big spotlight on making life even harder for families in the service. How crappy do we feel right now? sorry, banned on air force bases...

- The Army does this now too. It's due to the private corporation take over of government housing by Balfour Beaty/ Equity etc. It's a liability issue and has to do with their insurance. I believe it's pitts, rotties, dobermans and akitas. I may be missing some. Same with pools and trampolines in the backyard. The airforce is a little more prim and proper, but in here in my housing I have 4 pitts living in my neighborhood that are new and not grandfathered out. They don't notice unless someone complains. It's not you, it's the private companies and it woulda hit the fan at some point.
- Another reason why I'm waiting until I retire to get another dog. Just too much of a pain to have a pet in the military. If you think it's bad there then try coming to Germany with a bull dog. Germany has it's own list separate from the Military of banned dogs.
- They will never ban american bull dogs. They are not anything close to pit bulls. Anyone who's ever known a bull dog knows they are very docile sweet dogs. Any dog can be aggressive depending on the owner. This is not going to be dealth with at your base or by your commander. Probably someone in pentagon, but the first poster is right about the housing contracting out.
- The Army bans certain breeds also. At Ft Bliss you cannot have pits, german shepards (unless you have permission prior to entering), rots, and any mixes with any of these dogs. You are not to blame if any new dogs get banned from base on the Air Force. These dogs are banned because of temperament, even though it all depends how these breeds are raised.
- The navy goes by weight and size of the animal. One small dog or two small cats.
- Unfortunatley this has been caused by a lot of people in the military getting a dog and then not taking care of it properly so damage is done and people are hurt. Plus animals are left behind by people who don't want them anymore. An there is also people who are money hungry and sue someone because they looked at each other the wrong way. Housing is also been taken over by PPV companies and often they are protecting themselves as well. The Bulldog doesn't look like a Pitbull, you can tell by the nose, the coloring, etc... Plus they are so loving (and slobbery) that it definitely can't be confused with one. You should be allowed to have him without a problem. Kat- there is no such thing as the Navy doing dogs on size and weight only and being allowed 1 small dog or 2 cats. It honestly depends on the housing office. It can be limited to 1 cat or 1 dog or 2 animals. Only breeds are banned in some areas, not all. Several friends have large dogs and live in housing without a problem
