How do you make your cats poop smell better?
I feed my cat Science Diet kitten food, and he occasionally eats the Feline Greenies treats but when he poops his litter box smells up my entire bathroom, which is fairly large. I scoop his litter every day or every other day and I just don't know how to make the smell any better. I also use Tidy Cats cat litter deoderizer. Any suggestions?

- you have to clean it daily and scoop every hour or so
- my cat used to do the same thing so we bought a new cat box with a lid over it and it keeps the smell in the kitty box, you should give it a try
- You can go to the store and get air freshners and spray them around there.. thats wat i do.. and it works.. but i use like 2 or 3 of them
- why are you smelling your cats poop??
- As far as I know, poop smells, period. Try a covered cat box and that should keep the smell contained.
- Poop is poop, it just smells. Just scoop often, right after he goes if possible. If he is able to cover it completely it will help, I always make sure there is several inches of litter in the pan and that the pan is big enough to allow the cat to fully get in there to dig. They really do want to cover it, but if the pan is too small, they won't.
- my cats litter is in our bedroom and we use, "arm and hammer cat litter deopdorizer", and it works GREAT! u cant smell anything at ALL! i dont even clean his litter box every day either. usally around every 2-4 days. and it NEVER smells. good luck!
- Try spraying some Febreze on the poop.....
- Scoop every day, even twice a day. Mix with your scooper baking soda in there. Or they have special stuff made by Arm&Hammer for cat boxes. Tidy Cats litter deoderizer sucks in my opinion. We will not buy it again. Good luck!
- We used to have cats and we used plain old baking soda mixed with the litter. You can buy 10-12 lb bags for very little at Costco-type warehouses.
- how about one of those stick up things?
- I had the same problem with Science Diet and I switched to IAMS. And lay off the treats. If you want him to have greens, grow him some grass for cats. I have fed IAMS since 1988. I recently tried Science Diet again and they don't like it, their coats became tangled, and they lost weight they didn't need to lose. And although I made the switch slowly they got diarrhea from the Science Diet. And this was one of the original reasons why I switched to IAMS so long ago in the first place. Eukanuba is also a good product. I have 10 indoor/outdoor cats ranging in age from 1 1/2 yrs old to 15 yrs old who have been on IAMS all of their lives. I also use Johnny Cat Scoopable Cat Litter. It smells much better than Tidy Cat and does a better job at clumping. And I might add that their poop does not stink on IAMS and there is much less of the poop than on the other foods including Purina One, Zamzows, Science Diet, etc....and I also feed my dogs IAMS food and feeding a better DRY (do not feed wet food to cats or dogs) (if they must have wet food saok the dry kibbles in water) they actually eat less and it eands up costing the same as supermarket junk foods.
- Cat poop will never smell good. No matter what you do. Poop is poop. However, you can alter the content of the poop by changing the cat's food. IAMS is the best as far as I'm concerned because the poops don't smell as bad. I've done experiments with regular cat food and IAMS. Regular cat food eaters stunk up the WHOLE house. I had to open the windows! I changed back to IAMS and within 24 hours the house was no longer stinky. I also use "giant" sized covered litter boxes and scoopable litter. I use X-O as a deodorizer for both the litter box and the air. After I scoop a box I spray X-O lightly over the litter so it will continue to deodorize when the cat uses the box. I've had no problems with the cats reacting to the smell of X-O. No matter what you do, though, it's going to stink right after they use the litterbox.
- My experience has been that the higher the quality of food I feed my cats, the smaller their poops are, and the less smelly. Something in the Science Diet food does not agree with your cat's digestion. Eukanuba is a step up from Science Diet (regular Iams is about the same as Hill's), and brands like Felidae, Nature's Balance, Wellness, and Inova Evo are even better. I know that if you look at the prices you might feel some sticker shock - but I have found out the hard way that the more I spend on cat food, the less I spend on veterinary bills. One advantage of the higher quality foods is that cats are generally satisfied eating less, because the food is more dense nutritionally. So that also helps to offset the greater expense. You might also think about supplementing with probiotics like plain yogurt, or what's in Benebac, or or other products containing live acidophilus cultures, as well as a product like Prozyme that has enzymes in it to increase digestions. I've gotten stuff like this from Doctors Foster and Smith catalogue, and they have a website - http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/NavResults.cfm?N=2002+113753 - you can see the kinds of products I mean there. I'm sure most of that stuff is available either in your local pet store or at other places online, as well.
- Is your cat covering his poop? I have 4 cats and I was having a problem with one not covering it. If not, you can teach him to. Just put him in the litter box when there is already some in there. Take his paw and scrape the litter on top of it. He'll learn to do it too. Also, many litter boxes come with a filter in the cover (if it's a covered box), change the filter. One last thing. I just bought a littermaid cat box and OMG it's the best purchase I think I have ever made! It automatically cleans the box 10 minutes after the cat leaves it and deposits the waste into a receptacle that seals the odor in. I wish I would have purchased one years ago! If you can afford it, do it. I got mine on Ebay for a very fair price.
- Put spray on the litter box.
