Cross Breeds

What is it with people not liking cross breed dogs?

I am getting fed up of people referring to cross breed dogs as mutts and that they are horrible, i personally think cross breeds make lovely dogs and your less likely to get cross in blood lines. If more people appreciated the cross breed less of them will end up in rescue homes!!

  1. Actually, you've got it wrong. If LESS PEOPLE purposely bred MIXES, there would be less of them in rescue. People appreciate them plenty- it's just that they don't realize that cute puppy at the pet shop needs expensive food, vet care and TRAINING. I don't mind useful mixes- lurchers (sighthound cross) or alaskan huskies (husky x hound) that are bred for purposes and whose owners usually xray and health test the sire and dam before breeding. But I do mind when people cross dogs for no reason other than it'll have a 'funny' name because it's a poodle cross, or because it'll just be sooooo cute. There are too many dogs out there for people to be breeding mediocre specimens. The only dogs that should be bred should be titled, health tested and stellar examples of their breed.
  2. i agree with Ruby. And the problem isn't with cross bred dogs (mutts) it is with the purposely bred mutts just for profit when anyone could get one from a shelter.
  3. Nothing wrong with a cross-bred, mutt, mixed breed- whatever you want to call them. The problem is the people that purposely breed them (or "accidently" allow mating) and the people that buy them--expect them to be a certain type of dog, have certain qualities, and be a legitimate breed because a cute (i.e."doodle) name is assigned to the mix. If you have no purpose for the dog except as a companion, a mixed breed dog is fine and can make a good pet. The problem is not crossing the lines, but responsible breeding of lines for desired result-- efforts to emphasize good traits, weed out undesired ones. Most mixed breed dogs have NOT been produced from genetically-tested parents. Someone purchasing a "labradoodle" puppy doesn't know if say, the poodle b_tch carried a gene for PRA, as did the Labrador stud. So one may end up with a blind labradoodle in 4-5 yrs. Yes, you could end up with a blind labradoodle rescued from a shelter. The point is, not to BUY a labradoodle from a so-called "breeder" or backyard breeder. add: Just as with your own future litter of Pomeranian/ JRT, irresponsible breeding of mutts OR purebred dogs is the problem. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akxy_VDVoMZuMSS99XWlkrnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091110061947AAnkg96&show=7#profile-info-0aGPgvkvaa "Alot of animals end up in rescue because of irresponsible owners..if you can't be responsible for ad og don't get one..period this will stop so many going in to rescue". http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvQNKQC6PQhSCpb_YAFu.vfsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091110014958AAIkuZW Your JRT can still be spayed, end of problem.
  4. There is nothing wrong with mutts, you can find great companionship in a mutt. You can also find the same "rare" cross breed being sold for thousands of dollars in your local paper just down at the shelter for a mere adoption fee. There is, however, a problem with intentionally breeding mutts. There is no sense in it at all, it only adds to the over populated shelter's problems in the long run.
