- what exactly do you mean by service animals? as in, any kind of service, or more like just police dogs? - beagles are often used as sniffer dogs.. good noses i guess.. - l've only ever seen labrador seeing eye dogs .. i guess they're smart, loyal, calm [when they're older, anyway] - I've also seenlabradors as sniffer dogs - police dogs are often german shepherds - dogs used on farms are usually like border collies, australian cattle dogs, kelpies, etc.
- Given that most service dogs in Australia are still guide dogs then the most common dogs used are labradors and yellow labradors in particular, as they do not heat up as quickly as the black labs and hence and the only breed used in the really hottest parts of Australia like the northern territory. Some guide dog programs are beginning to use golden retrievers and crosses of labs and Golden's. The top assistance dog programs are also using labs and Golden's as these have been proven to be the best dogs for the job. There is however a very well respected hearing dog program that like all hearing dog programs throughout the world uses shelter dogs and these can be almost any breed or combination of breeds. However these dogs are incredibly hard to find and they Screen thousands of dogs every day for the few that make the grade. There are a couple of hundred hearing dogs operating in Australia at any one time. Hearing dog users do not have any more access disputes than guide dogs despite using small and unrecognized breeds. But the training, temperament and health checks that these dogs go through is brilliant and almost impossible to replicate. The Australian customs service has a world class breeding program of labradors which are also used by police and quarantine services as sniffer dogs. The police general purpose or attack type dogs use primarily german shepherds with the occasional rottwieler
