I don't remember the name of this older movie; About a boy and his sled dog. The dog dies.?

I really don't remember much about this movie except that near the end when the boy is racing this one lone dog and his sled, that the dog dies like ten feet before the finish line. He spent all this time training and fighting, and then the poor pup just dies. He gets a new puppy from like, an old family friend of something... What movie is this? I also think it was a book...
