What happens to the puppies if their mother dies while they are still below 8 weeks old?
My neighbor's dog just got hit by a car. Their puppies are still 2 weeks old. What will happen to them? My neighbor's dog just got hit by a car. Their puppies are still 2 weeks old. What will happen to them? Not that they were irresponsible. The dog really does escape its cage and go out to the street. And the zooming car was fast! The driver didn't even go back to say sorry :(

- WHy was the female out on the road when she had puppies???? # They will have to hand raise them or find a foster mother . They should be kept together as a litter until they are at least 8 weeks old, and not given away just because they mother is no longer alive. ADDED: Do your neighbours not have any doors on their house? I hope the dog and puppies ARE inside and not outside? Is the mother dead or still alive? Have they taken her to the vet?
- Well if they are responsible owners..which kinda sounds like they aren't however accidents happen. They will be forced to hand rear the puppies and take over mama's job, If not they will probably take the puppies to the nearest vet or humane society to have them raised there.
- If your neighbor is a good owner(sadly allowing his dog to get hit shows he needs a lot of work) then he will bottle raise the puppies on formula. While not ideal puppies can survive and thrive with proper hand rearing care.
- you will continue to nurture them by bottle feeding them for a couple of weeks more, than slowly wean them on to soften puppy food
- nothing as long as she continues to feed them and care for them. she will need to get formula and a bottle and take them to the vet for a wellness check. he can also tell her how to further care for them.
- That exact thing happened to my dog, but she was 3 hours old when her mother got hit. We put all of the pups in the bathtub with towels around it and made an evaporated milk formula and fed it to the puppies with an eyedropper and they turned out just fine. Good Luck and sorry for your neighbor's loss, ~♥~
- They to get puppy formula and feed the puppies, and fast. Did the mother die, has she been taken to a vet yet, if she is still alive, she is injured and hurting, if so, she could turn on the pups, do not try to let the pups nurse, unless she lays down by the pups to let them Get her to a vet if she still alive.
- they will be ok. are they still nursing? your neighbour will have to make sure they are warm and fed.
- http://www.ask-the-vet.com/dogs/21/Raising-Orphan-Puppies---Caring-For-Orphan-Puppies.html This is now what your neighbor's have to do. Why did they let momma out where she could be in any danger? so sad =( They better get busy and do momma dogs job.
- the pups will have to be bottle raised.
- They will need to be bottlefed until they are about 8 weeks of age. They will also be better pets if they have a little interaction with another dog, at some point. Bottle fed animals usually bond very well with humans and become good pets. If the people don't bottlefeed the puppies, they will probably not be socially good as pets. Please ask them to either bottlefeed them or find a rescue league that can help (look on www.petfinder.com or go to local pet supply stores when the rescue leagues are there showing animals). If they take them to the shelter or humane society, the puppies may very well be put to sleep. Besides bottlefeeding them, they need to be aided in defacating (rubbing a wet wash cloth on their bottoms until they urinate and poop). Sorry, this is how it is done. By the way - sometimes dogs get out. This is not ALWAYS the fault of the owner.
- she can finish raising the puppies by bottle..in another week they will be old enough to start weaning them from a bottle...main thing is the pups need to be kept warm...feed them every 3 hours and take a warm wet rag and rub their lower belly and rearend to get them to go to the bathroom this must be done at every feeding...this site you can print out and give to your neighbor...
