- 2 Kinds Those that bite and those that don't
- Pitbull is not a breed. I believe you are referring to the American Stafforshire Terrier. Not to be confused with the Bull Terrier (Spuds MacKenzie)
- male and female
- The actual term "Pitbull" refers to a breed (American Pit Bull Terrier), one breed. There are two ways to train Pitbulls, to bite or not to bite. But there is another another breed called the American Staffordshire Terrier, who LOOKS similar to the Pitbull, but is NOT the same breed.
- 1 Many laypeople have come to believe that "American Staffordshire Terrier" is a polite new name for pit bull, and many shelters incorrectly label pit bulls as AmStaffs (presumably to get adoption numbers up). Understanding the jumbled history of the breed names helps to clear up some of this confusion and mislabeling. Before the end of the 1800's, the dogs we think of as 'Pit Bulls' were typically called bulldogs (a name that is still used by many breed enthusiasts). In 1898, Chauncy Z. Bennet founded the United Kennel Club (UKC) and re-named the bulldogs 'American Pit Bull Terriers'. This move gave legitimacy to the breed and provided a framework for breed standardization. Then, in the 1930's a group petitioned the Amercian Kennel Club (AKC) to allow pit bulls to be shown in the conformation ring. To separate the dog from its reputation as a pit fighter, they were given the new title 'Staffordshire Terrier' which was later changed to 'Amercian Staffordshire Terrier' to avoid confusion with the English Staffordshire Terrier.
- There's only one "type" of Pitt. There are hoewever, SEVERAL types of dogs that look like the stereotypical pitt seen on TV. Check out specific pitt rescue groups & they should be able to tell you what is a pitt & what is a diff. type of dog. One eye-opening event happened for me when I went to a pet trade show. A Pitt rescue group had a board with several dogs on it. Almost all of them could have been mistaken for a pitt. I picked the wrong one at least 3 times before I finally got it right. The media has us all confued.
- There are far too many true Pit Bulls. One is two too many. And the genes they carry are very strong, cross breeds have many of the characteristics of Pits, so much so that they really are a dangerous animal to keep around. Just far too unpredictable. It isn't the dog's fault..we have done the job on this breed..big time. Regardless of the reasons, these animals are dangerous and I care not what all say about training, etc...these dogs are inbred to be agressive, with massive jaw muscles that can kill an adult, let alone a child or another dog. With all the dogs out there, I cannot find ONE reason this breed should go on unless they are being used as fighting dogs...and anyone who puts dogs through that should be put down!
- lol goldwing, must know EVERYTHING about pits (sarcastic) sorry goldwing, YOU DONT KNOW MINE. if anyone who says they are dangerous dogs, they obviously havent done their research, they are considered to be FAMILY DOGS and they are just that. they arent man eaters, they were taught in the 1800s to take down bulls and were fought against each other for sport but no matter what those owners made sure they taught loyalty to those dogs towards humans, so that they wouldnt be agressive towards humans. so maybe agressive domination was bred into them, but being loyal to humans was also bred into them. and you CAN teach a pit to NOT be agressive towards other dogs, the breeding of agression was so long ago, it is being bred back out they are a TERRIER! and there is no inbreeding what so ever. what terrier wasnt taught to hunt something. they are very loyal to their owners, and GREAT towards children. anyway, to answer your question, there is only one american pitbull terrier....then there is a american staffordshire terrier, which people say is the same thing but it is not, amstaffs are shorter and thicker. alot of people dont actually know what the REAL american pitbull looks like, which is sad because alot of so called 'pitbull' attacks are in fact NOT pitbulls. and punish the owner not the breed. its not their fault, some of these stupid ignorant people TEACH them to fight other dogs, even after a pit has been badly beaten, it still shows love to the hands saving it.
- There are 3 breeds that are commonly listed under the "pit bull" name. American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff), and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (StaffyBull). And some people might include Bull Terriers and American Bulldogs. A pit bull could be any one of these breeds or just a mix.
