Cross Breeds

My neighbors have a pitbull that goes ballistic if me or my dogs go in our backyard. Will he jump the fence?

If we stay in our backyard he goes ballistic lunging and snarling against the 6 foot wood fence. So far me and my dogs don't go in our own backyard because we are afraid of the pitbull. Is he likeley to jump the 6 foot wood fence seperating our properties? Sometimes I need to go in my backyard to water and do yard work.

  1. You need to talk with the neighbor. If there is any possibility that he could jump it, you need to take precautions. Perhaps you can extend the fence if necessary. You should be able to enjoy your own back yard without that kind of stress.
  2. First off don't be so quick to jump and fear a pit bull. they are not all bad. they smell fear just like any other dog. chances are he is just alerting that there is someone close to the yard and that is normal for any dog. Pit bulls are capable of jumping the fence but most won't unless provoked. yes it's true they are not likely to be around other dogs but they do not go out of their way to attack either. Pit bulls are constantly yearning for attention, they are big clowns they love human interaction which is what drives them to act out, if he barks all the time it's most likely because they don't give him enough attention,
  3. you should not have to deal with this foolishness. he MIGHT JUMP THE FENCE or somehow else get in. you should have the freedom in your own place to have peace and safety for you and your dogs. Dont take a chance...go to court and have him legally restricted. they, your neighbors must restrain him. if that were me i would make positively sure he cannot get into your property. talk to your neighbors if they are nice about this problem and ask them to restrict him if he is acting so aggressive...like i said if that does not work get a lawyer.
  4. You better be having a talk with your neighbor, pitbulls can be very dangerous dogs. I wouldn't trust them with anybody. There is no reason to feel threatened in your own back yard. If the dog ever does jump the fence, depending on where you live, you may shoot the dog to protect yourself, or if you live in town call the police. Call animal control or something and have they check and make sure the dog is not agressive, which it sounds like it is, because the dog may be a threat to other people and need to be put down.
  5. I have seen dogs actually climb fences, not jump but, climb. I think if a dog wants to he can try. I would go and talk t the people about their dog. It would scare me to think if he got loose what it could do to me.
  6. Since my 7lb 11.5" tall MinPin jumped over a 6' fence yeah, the Pit very well could. He needs training so he is not so aggressive, talk to the neighbors. I have has success with a nasty fence fighting Chow to be calm after tossing biscuits over the fence until he looked forward to me walking by and then I got closer until I was next to the fence and made him Sit b4 giving him his treat. You could try this alone, w/o your dogs until he is calmed down then have someone walk your leashed dog on the other side of your yard while you give the Pit treats. I do not trust wood fences either, they can be chewed or tunneled under. You may want to consider your own fence about 4' from theirs in your yard.
  7. Check the laws in your state, where I'm from pits are to be kept in a cage type environment with a top on it to keep it from climbing out. You neighbor could be in violation.
  8. I was gonna recommend exactly what ginbark said. toss the dog cookies till he likes see you! DO talk to the owner first: least he see you & start trouble thinking your trying to poison dog...
  9. My friends 42 pound american pit bull terrier can jump a 6 foot fence with no problem. You need to talk with your neighbor because that is not fair to you or your dogs. It sounds like his dog might be aggressive and should be destroyed if so. I also hope this does not ruin the breed for you because they can be a truly wonderful fun loving breed when they are bred and trained correctly. Hope this helps, good luck!
