How do city people walk their dogs and keep them from pooing on the sidewalk?

I have always lived in country-like areas and was always wondering how people in the city walk their dogs and where they walk them. I want several dogs when I move out and I want to socalize them properly and you can't really do that on a country road. Also, if/when your dog(s)poops on the sidewalk, how do you clean it up, I know people use dog bags but where do you keep the bags, in your pocket(before use!)? Where do you put the bag of poo? BTW I have owned dogs before and we currently do own one, I've just never seen how people walk their dogs in a city. Thanks for all your quick responses! A couple of people said they take their dogs to the park, when your dog messes there, do you have to clean it up? What if you don't notice your dog pooing?

  1. I'm pretty sure ANY dog will just poop if it needs to go enough, so there's nothing special about any of these other people and their pooches lol. Keep the plastic bags in your pocket. When you pick up the poo, you just have to carry it until you come across a trash can. Thanks for being concerned about it!
  2. In most large cities I've been in, dog owners are required to clean up after their dogs when they do their business on the streets. Bags can be carried in your pocket or purse and then dropped in the closest trash can (preferably an outdoor one).
  3. Keep the bag in your pocket/hand, when he does the deed put it in a garbage bin.
  4. I usually take the dogs to the park but there is sidewalks on the way there so if they do go potty on the side walk I scoop it up with the number of doggy bags I take with me I keep them in my pockets then I throw away in the waste baskets that the parks have.....
  5. They carry a pooper scooper and the bags. Either they carry the bags in a duffel bag or their pocket or purse. They clean up the mess, put it in a bag and deposit it in the next trash can they walk by. Usually in populated area like this there are trash cans everywhere. If you read trash magazines like (star, enquirer) and stuff like that, it usually shows some movie star and how they handle their dog's poop. That is where I learned all this stuff.
  6. Yes, i live in Chicago and I carry around a dog bag and pick up the poop. There are tons of trash cans all over the place where you can drop the poop. Also, Chicago has a lot of parks and some just for dogs so we take our dogs to the park. Almost every neighborhood in Chicago has a park, so having a dog in Chicago is easy and fun.
  7. Most people in bigger cities have little pooper scoopers and baggies to collect the poop in after it lands on the ground. As for socializing, there are some "dog parks" where they can go interact, or you can send them to something similar to a daycare. Or you could just let them visit with your friends and their dogs and buy a house with a yard.
  8. You need to have them on a leash, because most cities have leash laws. Some people train them to always go in the gutter. Also, most dogs just don't like to poo on the cement, so they will naturally gravitate to the grass on the side of the sidewalk. If they do go on the sidewalk, you just pick it up with a plastic baggie that most people carry with them when walking their dog. I keep baggies either in my pocket or just carry them in my hand. There are usually garbage cans nearby and if not, you can toss the bag in any leaf piles on the street that people have put out for collection. You say you want several dogs. I would advise against having more than 2 because more than 2 dogs, and you have a pack. Also, if you are moving to the city, there are limits on how many dogs you can own. I know in my city limits, you can have no more than 3 adult dogs, and it's 4 if you are in county limits.
  9. I live in the city and I take pooper bags and when they go I pick it up with the pooper bags. It makes me so mad when I see pet owners allow their dog to go on public streets and yards and not pick it up. You can buy a box of 100 little bags that are actually used for disposable pampers to be put in and thrown away in public. They work great for pooper bags.
  10. We clean up after them. Many cities here (Canada) have off leash dog parks, which are great. You still pick up after your dog, but the animals also get a chance to be social with other dogs. Mine loved it when we lived in the city, we'd go at least 2x a day, as it was only 1 block away. It was also a great way to meet new people, dog people are a friendly lot generally.
  11. in nyc i see a lot of people walking their dogs, and dog-walkers walking a lot of dogs.they use bags and carry em around until they see a garbage can to dispose the bag and its contents. another option they have are the dog runs in various parks around the city.....
  12. Yes, keep the bags in your pocket before use. Carry the full bag with you until you reach a garbage can or return home. A lot of cities have parks where dogs can go "off leash" or parks where they must be leashed. Get in the car and drive to such a park. Bring plenty of bags though, and some treats would be nice.
  13. We don't. Our dogs poo where they will & we just have to pick it up. The good thing is that a garbage can is at almost every corner. Or you could always throw it in a neighbors can.
  14. I live in Chicago, and not every area in the city is lacking grass. 99% of residential areas have grass and parks... In some downtown areas there is no grass for a few blocks so I've seen dogs go to the bathroom on the concrete, you pick it up with a plastic bag just as you would pick it up off of grass. There are garbage cans on almost every block in the city, or in the alley behind houses and businesses. It's not rocket science.
  15. Clean it up with bags. And most cities will fine you if you dont pick after your dog.
