What race horses have been claimed-then gone on to fame?

Horses that were considered nobodies...then they turned out to become great or good horses. Horses like Seabiscuit,Lava Man etc. I would love to find some older horses, rather than recent ones. but those suggestions are great too! Thanks!

  2. The most successful horses that were claimed (including claiming price and career earnings) are: Lava Man $50,000 $5,250,724 Budroyale $32,000 $2,840,810 Say Florida Sandy $60,000 $2,085,408 King’s Swan $80,000 $1,924,845 Ladies Din $32,000 $1,906,754 Native Desert $32,000 $1,828,177 Also very deserving of the list is Stymie who raced in the 1940s was claimed for $1,500 and won $918,485
  3. To add to the excellent list Hoss provided: John Henry wasn't claimed, but he was running for $25,000 when Sam Rubin, who wasn't eligible to claim, bought him. *Princequillo, a leading sire whose offspring included Hall of Famer Round Table and the dam of Secretariat, raced for a $1500 claiming price and was claimed by Boone Hall Stable, whose trainer (Hall of Famer Horatio Luro) turned him into a stakes-quality "cup horse" (distance specialist). The Thoroughbred Three Bars, who went on to become a leading sire of Quarter Horse champions both on the racetrack and the show ring, was a $2,000 claim. U-see-it, dam of Kentucky Derby winner Black Gold, was entered by owner Al Hoots in a claiming race at the old Juarez racetrack. There was supposed to be a "gentleman's agreement" in effect that she wouldn't be claimed, but a man dropped a claim in for her. Al Hoots refused to allow U-see-it to be taken, drawing a shotgun on the officials who came to get her. Hoots and the mare were banned for life from racing, but U-see-it bore Black Gold to the cover of Black Toney.
