How much do small dogs cost per month?
I am looking to adopt a small/medium sized dog, and I was wondering how much they cost. I don't want to go adopt a dog, and then not have the money to keep it happy. I know that all dogs differ, but a rough estimate would be more than appreciated. Thanks!

- Well they are pretty cheap to care for, its mainly time and love you have to give alot in a month. But if your feeding him/her dry dog food you can buy big bags that will do a month for around 12 pounds. Then just the odd pound for a toy or treats.
- I have a Jack Russell, he's nine years old now. The only costs we have is: a big bag of food every month/two months and vet costs once a year for his shots for Rabies and stuff. When we got him we just bought a dogbasket for him to sleep in and a few toys and that's it And for toys...well i gave him a few teddybears that used to be mine and he always finds tennisballs outside so i don't have to buy them for him.
- Food - $30-$40 Puppy pads (not crutial) - $10 Groomer- $40 vet- $60 ..not every month you will also need toys bed and crate.
- The first month is the most expensive. Vaccinations and vetting is usually already done when adopting a dog, however you can still take the dog in for a checkup. Purchasing a crate is a good idea. A collar, leash, toys, food, bedding, etc. So in the first month, you're looking at a decent amount. However in the following months, unless a medical condition arises, the cost isn't huge. Food, treats, any replacement item that the dog may have destroyed by then, any grooming cost (depending on the kind of coat the dog has. Short haired dogs require little professional grooming), etc. However what I would suggest is putting away a specific amount every month in case of emergencies. If an illness occurs, veterinary fees can get quite expensive. I can't really give you an estimate. The price varies greatly.
- Small dog costs from $5 to $10,000 to buy from $1 to $10 per day to feed $0 to keep your dog happy You are not ready for a dog of any size yet because you can never pay for the love your dog will give you
- Estimated costs (from personal experience): Insurance -about £15 a month Food -allow £25, or less if you intend to feed dry complete food. Initially, bed and/or rug (from £15 to as much as you want to spend), collar and lead (£8), address tag (£5), brush and comb (£ 15) Toys ? Crate -about £50 Course of jabs at the vets (about £62, and then £31 per year). Later -spaying or neutering (about £120) Tiffypanda
- Depends on how much you are willing to spend and where you live. If you are going to get a puppy, it will be a bit more expensive, since they need booster vaccinations a couple of times during their first year. Also, if the shelter has not neutered/spayed the dog, you will need to get that done also. Vaccinations in my area (Eastern US) are about $150 (that does include monthly prevention for fleas/ticks, anti-worming meds, fecal exam, and nails clipped). I'm only going to have to do it one more time during his first year (the shelter did the initial vaccinations). Flea/Tick prevention is about $90 for 6 months. Then supplies...I spend about $300 on my pup during the first month or so. But that's up to you. Some of the stuff that I spend money on was not a necessity. Food. I am switching my pup to Wellness right now. A 15lb bag is about $33. That should last him about 2-3 weeks, maybe more, since the higher the quality of food the less they eat. I have a med-large mixed breed btw.
- I consider my girls to be medium sized dogs, at around 50 lbs. They are lab mixes. I spend around $50 a month of food, supplements, and heartworm preventive. (we use smartpak with wellness, Canine Complete Joint Mobility and interceptor). $250 a year for the vet (bloodwork, vaccines, exams) so that's 20 a month Insurance, or putting money into savings for emergencies is also wise. Perhaps $30 a month. So, about $100 a month and depending on the food, that may be a high end estimate. That is PER dog. One time expenses (or occaisional) Crate = 80 to 100 dollars Bowls = 20 dollars Leash and Collar = 30 dollars Chew toys = 10 (you may or may not have a chewer) Training class = 150 dollars Go ahead and plan to vet a rescue immediately, it's not uncommon for shelter dogs to have worms, bordatella, or things like that. You figure you may be looking at about 100 to 150 there for a visit.
- depends on the breed, some need grooming, chew toys, training or teeth brushing
