What are some other small dogs convenient for the house?

I LOVE Pugs. But before I get another dog, I want to know some other cute small dogs. Not a chicuahua!

Have you looked into the dogs from the 'toy' group- they are all small and most of them were bred as lap dogs- so they are great house pets (and yes- the Chihuahua does fall under this category) My favorites in this breed are the Papillion and the Shih Tzu. Paps are beautiful little dogs, and real 'big dog in little dogs body' type dogs- they are very intelligent, and up for anything. Shih Tzus are lovely little dogs, very friendly and playful and just want to be with you. Another small breed I recommend is the Cavalier King Charles spaniel- they are beautifully natured, beautiful looking dogs, who make great pets for just about anybody. Whatever choice you make, please make sure to buy from a respectable, registered breeder and not a pet store or backyard breeder. The popularity and size of these little dogs means that its very easy to produce these dogs in large numbers in puppy mills and at people's houses- to the detriment of the breed. Look into the possible health issues of the breed that you are interested in, and talk to the breeders about this- good breeders will test their dogs for these genetic problems. A little extra money for the right dog and a good breeder can literally save thousands of dollars in the future that you wont have to spend in vet bills.
