Are there any breeds of dogs that are better with cats than others?
I have a 1 year old Bengal cat and would love to get a dog. Are there any breeds of dogs that are better with cats than others?

- I have Chihuahua's & a big huge Birman cat all in the house together & they get a long just fine...it really comes down to how well you work with them both...& with any breed puppy or dog you must supervise the 2 until you feel comfortable letting them alone together.
- cocker spaniels (English) seem to get along well with them, the best results I've had are with neutered male dogs who seem to attract cats like magnets.
- breed doesnt matter as long as they grow up with cats and are properly trained some dogs tend to have more of a predatory instinct tho such as huskys but for the most part breed doesnt matter
- Some people think so. Others don't. A calm retriever, or something like a retired Greyhound or another breed that doesn't bother chasing for life, will do better than the average terrier, pit bull or else.
- There are some dogs that have a high prey drive, for example: Pit Bull, Husky, Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepard just to name a few. These dogs can see the cat as prey and try to attack it. However, with slow introduction (it took 1 month) I got my cat aggresive Rottweiler to be comfortable around cats. I would never leave them alone together but now she doesnt mind them. I would probably go with a smaller breed, that is around the same size as the cat so that way it won't seem like "prey" or go toyour local shelter, where many of them have been tested with cats and you will see which dogs would be perfect for your home with a cat. Shelter dogs are the best, plus you are saving a life if you adopt :) Don't breed or buy while innocent shelter dogs die. Save a life: Adopt!
- While there are exceptions to every rule, breeds that aren't trained or bred to hunt are better suited to home with cats.........otherwise you'll have high speed chases!
- i think a pit bull mix is great with all cats, i have a pit bull mixed with a labrador retriever and every cat we have had so far, she has loved like her own baby
- I have a 2 1/2 year black lab with a history of killing cats. He ran wild on an Indian Reserve for 3 months and had graduated to killing and eating cats to survive. When he was taken from the Reserve the initial appraisal was that he was unsalvageable and was slated to be euthanized. The Indians had already decided that and were hunting him. The lady that rescued him refused to accept that and took him home with her. She already had too many dogs and asked if I would take him since I was looking for a dog. That was two Summers ago and tonight "Walker" will be sleeping at the bottom of the stairs with two cats. If they aren't there when he goes to lay down he will go and get them. Since we put real food in his belly he has shown absolutely no threatening behaviour to these cats and he is the gentlest dog that I have ever had. Retreivers I would trust with any cat. The dogs that I would be concerned about are the sight hounds and guard breeds. I have seen german shepards and dobermans nurse kittens but I have also witnessed the results of seemingly unprovoked attacks on cats too. If the cats and dogs are familiarized attacks are very rare but accidental bites can be devastating to cats. A word of advice though; do not feed them together. Dogs are very protective of their food supply and it is the rare dog that will share with a cat. I can place my hand in my dogs food dish but the cats give him a wide berth when he is at the dish. They have had a few nasty reminders about that.
- my maltese mix loves my cat
