Cat for people allergic to cats? lol ?

Cats are my favorite animal. I live with my boyfriend and his dad. His dad's girlfriend is over a lot and she is allergic to cats. :( Is there a cat I can get (if its okay with his dad lol) that won't bother his dad's gf's allergies? I know my 2 of my cousins are allergic and they have hairless cats. But I don't want a hairless cat. So what kind of cat? Or is there medicine I could give the cat? I'm not going to suggest she take medicine lol.

  1. i ask Doctor
  2. There is nothing to give to the cat, BUT what we have suggested and told worked with other friends is that you keep the cat restricted to certain rooms only, such as if there is one large bedroom with a door leading into the bathroom, keep the cat in those two rooms. :)
  3. Other than the hairless cat..no. Sorry she would have to take allergy medicine..giving the cat medicine wouldn't help.
  4. Some people who are allergic to cats can tolerate a siamese cat. But there is no real proof that everyone could tolerate them. A friend of mine was allergic to most cats, but could be around, and even owned siamese cats.
  5. Even a hairless cat can trigger allergies if that person is very allergic. It is not the hair or skin cells that a person is allergic to- it is the protien in the cat's saliva. All cats 'bath themselves', that is where the allergy comes into play. The more a person is around whatever they are allergic to, the worse their allergies may become.
  6. People are not allergic to the fur on a cat. It is the saliva from them licking themselves during cleaning. Odds are a cat will not be a good idea at all. I am allergic and if I even stand near someone who has a cat I can't breathe and my eyes swell. Unless she has very mild allergies and is willing to have allergy shots so you can have a cat I would hang it up.
  7. its either a hairless cat or not cat at all
  8. how much do his dad love this gf?, or limit the cat to one room, yes it can be done
  9. Why can't you suggest she take meds? That's more logical then thinking the cat should have them - the cat isn't allergic - the gf is. And I'd be looking for your own place to live - its your bf's father's house and its not right to expect him to allow a pet if he doesn't want one in the house. You and your bf need to find your own place so you can have a cat. But to answer the question, there are several breeds that tend to shed less then normal cats - Oriental SH, Siamese (not the old fashioned kind with thicker coats), Bengals, Ocicats, Burmese, Abys, Rexes. But you are looking at spending a minimum of $500 for any of the breeds for a pet - usually several hundred more. Why not start working on your own place to live and then go adopt a kitten/cat from your local shelter.
