Does anyone know if there is a gender factor for the Kentucky derby race horses?
What sex and type of hourse was Eight Bellies? My friend is telling me that the Kentucky Derby is made up of only female mare hourses. My contention is that they are mixed, Mares, stallions, Colts etc. of all different sexes. Can someone clarify? Wasn't Babaro a therobred stalion?

- stalions.
- 19 were 3 year old colts/geldings (boys) 1 was a 3 year old filly (girl) boys carry...126lbs.... girls carry.....121lbs...
- She was a filly. From what I understand colts, geldings and fillies can enter the derby but, they must be three years old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Derby
- Colts make up most of the entries in the Kentucky Derby but fillies are allowed. Generally fillies are too small to compete with the colts but Eight Belles was an exception. She was a big female and could run with the colts. Some say that breeding may be behind the injuries to Eight Belles. Thoroughbreds are being bred for speed, consequently the bones are light and more fragile than say race horses of fifty years ago.
- In this situation, i don't think that gender played a factor at all. The kentucky derby is made up of both male and female thoroughbreds who are 3 years old. A young female is called a filly, and young intact male a colt.
- Thoroughbred Gender 101 foal - male or female at birth colt - male up to age 3 ridgling - male with one undefended testicle gelding - castrated male stallion - male 4 or more years of age filly - female up to age 3 mare - female 4 or more years of age Conditions for Kentucky Derby One and One Quarter Mile Three Year Olds - Weight For Age Colts and Geldings - 126 lbs Fillies - 121lbs Three Fillies have actually won the Kentucky Derby Regret - 1915 Genuine Risk - 1980 Winning Colors - 1988
- The “Kentucky Derby” is made up of main Colts and Geldings and maybe one or two fillies. Fillies are usually the under dogs of the Derby, due to their size. There have only been 3 fillies to ever win the Kentucky Derby in 134 years of racing. Winning Colors (1988) Genuine Risk (1980) Regret (1915) But the “Kentucky Oaks” is run the day before the “Kentucky Derby” and is made up only 3 year old Filles. But sadly No winner of the Kentucky Oaks as ever went on to win the Kentucky Derby
