Cross Breeds

Limits to Cross-breeding dogs?

Are there any breeds of dog which you cant cross-breed into a new type? Or are all dogs intra-shaggable?

  1. All dogs are the same species. As such, all dogs can breed with one another. Sometimes their physiology prevents it from being possible though (like a pug mounting a mastiff).
  2. Technically yes, any dogs can be mated together. The biggest problem is health concerns... Take a dacshund and a pug for example. Pugs can have eye problems due to the fact that they protrude. Dacshunds have back problems because of their long spine. Mix the two together and you could end up with bad eyes and back problems... There are also no health tests available for cross bred dogs as most things like hip scores have an average for the BREED, mix two breeds together and you will not know what the average should be. ADD - Sorry but the post below is not right... their brains will not be too big for their heads lol There can be complications if the female is the smaller dog as the puppies can grow to large and do damage though.
  3. are you thinking of doing it, or are you just curios? i dont think there are any specific rules when it comes to cross-breeding. there is obvious things to consider when purposely breeding two dogs, is if one is hugely bigger than the other one in breed, dogs can be born with a constant headache. if there brains are to big for their heads...
  4. all breeds can technically breed with any other breed. The question is.. why? They do NOT make a "new type".. cross breeding only makes MUTTS with unpredictable traits or qualities. It doesnt matter if you stick a cutesy name to it.. a mutt is still a mutt.. a rose by any other name..
