What is the difference between cross-breed and mixed breed?
Out of complete boredom, I was looking at the pet section of craigslist in my local area. (It is always an unending source of entertainment.) Well, anyway, I came across this statement in an ad: "They are cross-breeds, NOT mixed." So, what is the difference?

- There is no technical difference at all. A mutt is a mutt. I think people say cross-breed when they are trying to say that they intentionally bred two dogs of different breeds, but that's still a mixed breed!
- Ab-solutely nothing. It's kind of like the "hybrid vs. mutt" argument--they think mixed-breed sounds worse than cross-breed; therefore, they think they are going to get more customers by claiming their dogs are cross-bred and NOT mutts.
- Not a thing, just another word for mixing two breeds. If you take two different breeds and breed them you get mix/cross breed there is no difference. Same thing different word.
- Cross breed has two purebred parents. For example AKC poodle and an AKC Golden Retriever to create cross bred puppies. Mix breed has 2 or more breeds in the parents. For example husky/shepherd and a lab/poodle breeding together creates mixed breed puppies. Or a purebred lab breeding to a poodle/golden. Either way they are mutts or mixes in my book.
- Generally, as I understand it, cross breed is a dog bred from 2x pedigree breeds. Mixed breed is mongerel of more than 2x breeds. As pedigree breeds are basically inbred human conceits, cross breeds and mongerel breeds are often healthier in all respects.
- They're the same thing. Crossbreeding is used in hybridization, which is not the case of breeding two breeds together. People can 'say' all sorts of shit to sell stuff. Like "They are Teacup Yorkies NOT Standard Yorkies" Which in reality there is no such thing as either! There is JUST Yorkie. You find liars and suckers all over the place.
- Sunset is correct, cross breed has two pure-breed parents ex. - pure blood Chow, and pure blood poodle mix breed is also called a mutt, their parents together have to equal to at least 3 DIFFERENT breeds, ex. - mom- husky, lab, cocker spaniel dad- husky, poodle even though both parents have husky in them, that counts as 1 breed and the moms lab is 1, so now 2 , and the moms cocker spaniel is 1 so 3, and the dads poodle is 1 so 4 breeds would be in the puppies pure breeds are dogs that have only 1 breed (not including being a descendant from wolves) ex. pure breed Chow, like our puppy, Kahlan hope i helped, and this is the way the breeds are to be explained
- Difference? None. Same thing except used in different words. People just brag and start drama about it.
- there is NO difference For some reason people dont think a dog is a mutt if the breeds in the mix are known.
- Not a damn thing. It does not matter if the breeds of the parents are know, if its more than to breeds, its a mutt, a cross, a mix. All the same thing at the end of the day
- (Sorry dog-people... irrelevance ahead) Cross breeding is when you take a red rat snake and a king snake and market the offspring as a "Jungle Corn" or a red eared slider and a yellow bellied slider and market the offspring as "Yellow eared sliders" or the crazy person who had the brilliant idea of seeing if the genetics of the American crocodile and the Nile crocodile were compatible... (which, by the way, they are, but I can't think of what they decided to call it)... there's more examples, but my brain's tired today... Basically, in my book, boils down to taking two animals that are ~just barely~ closely related enough to produce viable offspring, and giving those offspring fancy names and big price tags... With dogs, it's all mutts... you put a bunch of dogs in a "free-for-all" situation, they'll all be breeding with each other making mutts... reptiles on the other hand, have to be tricked to do this, and it's extremely rare in nature. Hey, I warned you it would be irrelevant, didn't I? (It's just that I'm almost starting to like it here where people badmouth BYB's, and over in Reptiles where I "live" there are very few people who give a crap about it... (honestly, you don't need to know the gender of your snake if you don't plan on breeding it, and if you do plan on breeding it, you need to do enough research to know how to tell if it's male or female without having to ask HERE... Jeeze...) sorry... Just ask Kat, I'm A.D.D....
- Anybody dumping dogs on-line is a crook,ignorant & a LIAR!!! Sticking a lie on mutt doesn't change the fact that it's a mongrel. Dunno why folks can't comprehend that.....oh yeah.....ignorance & wish-think.
