What is it about the red dot from laser pens that drives dogs/cats crazy?

Both my dog and all my friends cats go nuts when we play with the laser pointers, my dog loves it, actually tries to bite the dot but wondered what it is about it that makes them react that way?

1. I would say that it appeals to their natural instinct to catch pray. My dog loves tossing his toys around. He's only playing but he's acting in the exact same way he would if he was killing something - shaking it, tossing it around, chewing it, etc.
2. It is depend on your dog and your friend's cats feel about see a red dot from your laser pen. Some dogs and cats can feel play around with red dots. Others can be mad and bite. ...
