I have a complicated question regarding my puppy?
I find myself to be in a pretty bad situation: I was looking for a small dog ( I live in a condo) for a couple months I looked around at all the local shelters but no luck (all the dogs were pretty big except for the chihuahuas) My bf wanted to buy a puppy from a pet shop and I said no! (being aware of what goes on in puppy mills) Well we looked and looked and one day he took home the cutest yorkie I have ever seen and I immedietly fell in love...he got him from a pet shop and swore the owner said ''he gets them from a very small breeder, that only sells to him''. I kept him (guilt and all). Well just after a few days of having him we took him to a vet to get him checked out and it turns out he has Parvo Virus! The pet shop is picking up all of the vet bills... I guess thats what I deserve for being so naive and listening to the lies of a greedy pet shop owner... after just a few days I spent with my little baby I am verrry attached and there is a 50/50 chance he's not gonna make it. (He's getting better though) I am torn because the pet shop owner has offered a refund. Heres the problem: 1. I do not want my money to support puppy mills (I KNOW we made a huge mistake in the first place) 2. I am attached to the lil' guy and do not want to desert him when he needs me the most Any Suggestions of what I should do? I want to make it clear I KNOW I made the wrong choice of accepting a puppy from a pet store and I feel guilty enough as it is!

- You know you did wrong, so suck it up and deal with the consequences.
- Do not compound your guilt by deserting the pup, you already know the score. You have him, give him the best shot he has!
- It's not the dogs fault so I wouldn't "return" him. That would be awful. Just see what happens - if he doesn't make it then get your vet to type something up to take to the pet store so you can get your refund IF he doesn't survive. And then keep a careful eye out at local shelters and rescue groups. Patience will pay off in the end. Also, just if you didn't know...you can use petfinder.com for help in any and all doggie adoptions searches. I pray your baby makes it though.
- You shouldn't have to surrender your dog for a refund. What's done is done, you know the truth about puppymills, but the situation is not going to get any better if you surrender your dog. Demand a refund period... no giving up the dog, and he shouldn't fight you because his business tactics are shady. What you SHOULD do is call Animal Control and tell them about the situation, they can do an investigation of the pet store to check out the conditions he's keeping his dogs in and remove them if they deem necessary.
- with or without you buying the dog, it still would of gotten the virus. you buying it has nothing to do with that. next time you know to stick to your first instinct and dont buy one, because its supporting these places - but as for right now you need to do whatever it takes to help the puppy you have vowed to take care of.
- You obviously know what you did wrong. Basically, your just gonna have to wait and see what happens, and the best you can do is just hope for the best, and hope that everything turns out fine. Say your prayers, and I hope everything works out.
- Just take care of the pup. He might make it. Let the puppy mill thing go. Your bf made the mistake. Hopefully he won't do it again. Really, though, he should have worked together with you on the major decision of getting a dog. You're stuck with a dog for 15 - 20 years. He shouldn't have brought the dog home without your consent.
- it may be wrong to buy from a pet store ..but how i see it is that as you and your bf paid for him he is now yours and you have the responsibility to look after him and love him..so keep him..yes the money may go to a greedy unfair pet shop owner..but thats the last time you'll do it again and you've learnt your lesson..
- Although you say you dont want to support puppy mills, that puppy that you have is attached to you and your attached to it. Its not like shopping for a car you can't just unattach yourself to a pet and I think you will regret if you do. I think you should keep the puppy, and continue to have the store pay for the pet bills. If this store is already paying for vet bills then if you think about it technically their spending the money you spent on the dog for your dog so your not necessarilly giving it to dog mills.
- Don't feel bad I have made the same mistake as you once and my puppy also had parvo and he past away about 1 week after we found out he got parvo. dont take it out on yours self. If your dog has had it more then five days and he is getting better then you might have a chance that he will make it. just give him pedielite and make sure he keeps it down so he don't dehighdrate thats the worse part of him having parvo and thats the first thing that will kill him. I would make the shop owner pay for all the vet bills and make him refund you the money and any suffering that you have went throu thats what mine paid for i know money will not take the place of your dog but it will teach him not to be shady any more and be honest about the dogs he is saling. make sure you bleach everything so your next dog wont get it also
- Not the dogs fault, no sense in putting him through the trauma of a new home. Get him well and give him a good home for the rest of his life.
- It's not the dog's fault you supported a puppy mill, it's yours. You brought the dog into your home, it's your commitment now and you must live with the guilt.
- If your little guy has parvo then the others at that pet shop most likely do also. Make a phone call and have animal control there ASAP! Maybe they can get something done and put these money grubbs out of business! Craigslist.com has many, many dogs of all shapes ages and sizes up for adoption, for the next time you are looking for a pup.
- What's done is done!!! If you have the opportunity to save this puppy's life, then do it! A refund is the most offensive thing that shop-owner could offer. Just keep in mind for the future that you can just buy a dog (especially small ones) from breeders. I found my Bichon Frise online (there are sites where breeders post puppies they have for sale). It seemed kinda weird at first to buy a pet online, but you get to talk to the owners over the phone and can go visit the puppy if you so wish. Mine was from Iowa, so I didn't have the time to go meet it. Buying from such breeders is usually more expensive, but you can be assured that the puppy will be healthy. If you think about all the hospital bills you will save, it's totally worth it. In any case I really hope your puppy makes it! I know how hard it must be for you!!
- A puppy bought by a top champion breeder could get sick too and the proper thing to do would be to get a refund. It doesn't matter where you got your puppy from. I knew a breeder that was a small breeder and she mostly sent her puppies to a pet store. She lived out in a rural area and didn't want strangers coming out to her house. She had a handicapped son and was afraid of getting robbed. I think you should take the refund, and you need to disinfect your house really good and any outside areas your puppy might have been so that your next puppy doesn't get it too. Shake it off and get a refund. Every puppy is a chance for something to go wrong no matter where you get it from.
- 1. It's too late for that now. You've already accepted a puppy from a pet store that got this pup from at the very least a wholly irresponsible breeder if not an out and out puppy mill or broker. Your money has already gone to encourage the practice of selling dogs. Secondly, if the pet store is truly picking up all of the vet bills, then they aren't really making much in the way of profit from this particular puppy because the vet bills are probably going to be as much or more than what the store paid for the puppy in the first place. 2. You've made the mistake, there's not much really that can be done to undo it now. You love the dog, and giving the dog up isn't going to make you feel any better about being foolish enough to get a puppy from a store in the first place anyway. Also, if the store owner gives you a refund under the conditions that the ownership of this dog goes back to him then the pet store owner is just going to euthanize him. Pet stores are a business and they are in business to make money. Spending money on vet bills for a dog that may or may not make it and will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to sell if he does survive does not make sense for a money-making business. It isn't exactly clear from what you have written what exactly the circumstances are. What's the catch? Is the refund offered in the event that the dog dies? Is it offered, in addition to the vet bills that have already accumulated, under the condition that you return the dog? Is the refund offered if you agree to waive the vet bills? These are all things to be considered. The best scenario would be the store paying all vet bills associated with the parvo virus AND giving you a refund because they sold you a sick dog. However, that's likely to happen when pigs sprout wings and take flight.
- First of all the pet store might not of gotten the puppy from a puppy mill. Just because it has Parvo does not mean that. I've had several dogs die from that disease and none of them came from puppy mills. The puppies can contact this disease anywhere. The pet store is bound by law that they sell you a good healthy puppy and the warranty is for so long. Your puppy can contact Parvo up to a year old. Keep the puppy if he lives. He has an immune to the disease, but probably is now a carrier. You are o.k. to keep the puppy. Not all pet stores are bad. You did your research and you was lied to ( if they lied ). Don't worry about it. You meant no harm. You have a rescued puppy if he did come from there. Good Luck ! I hope he makes it.
- I am a breeder of toy yorkies, i live in Bethel, OH i really hope everything goes ok with your little puppy. If it doesnt though and you want another one you can contact me at kayla_grant_mit@yahoo.com i will have more born on Aug, 5
- Tell the pet store owner that you will demand a full refund if the dog dies. Keep the little guy, he has been through enough. Bear in mind tho that puppies who have had parvo often develop heart problems. Be sure he gets lacto bacillius bacteria to help his gut heal. Many people swear colloidal silver kills Parvo and I have seen it appear to help. It doesn't interfere with other treatment either. Good Luck.
- i guess it all depends on how much you really love the puppy.and if you have the money to properly take care of him.and mostly if you have any small children/any children for that matter, around the pup.see sometimes children can catch what animals have ,and you defiantly do not wont that,do you? and if you do not have the money to properly take care of him well, what would you do when he needs to go to the doctor? see no money to help him.so i think i would probably report the place to the humane office.and then ask them what should you do about the pup.and they will take action against the place you got the pup from.and then if you have to send the pup back you will know that they will be keeping up on him(the pup)and the store where purchased from.so start with that.and go from their.it would really help you if you could talk to your spouse about what him/her really thinks about this.and listen with an open mind.and the next time you decide to get a pup please, please go to your local animal shelter.they have the most loving and caring pups as well as other animals their.these animals love you a whole lot more than any pup could ever love you.so i don't really know what else to say.but, please do what is right for you the pup and, your family.and please report that store to the local humane society.please.do what is in your heart .
- The decision is yours but if the pup goes back to the store odds are he will be euthanized. The cost of treatment for parvo can be high and results not guaranteed. Even should your pup survive Parvo there could be other problems down the road with poor health. Also you need to scrub everything and I do mean everything down with bleach that you can. Toss any toys or blankets you have gotten for the pup. Parvo can survive upwards of a year and you dont want that should you decide to get another pup. My thoughts are with you its a hard decision to make.
- I'm so sorry for your situation with your new puppy. I feel your pain...my dad (when i was little) bought us a puppy from a puppy mill and he ended up having PARVO as well. After a massive vet bill- which my dad paid for, since my sister and i had already gotten attached to the puppy, he survived and we loved and cared for him all his life. Now as an adult i adopted my puppy from a shelter.... I would take care of the puppy since he will have a better life with you then being returned. wish you lots of luck!
- Don't desert him, that would be sad. And I think you are partially wrong about some pet stores. When my female lab (that we were told was fixed) got bred (to my male lab) we sold two to a pet store. They took great care of the puppies, and had all thier vet fees and shots taken care of. Not all puppies at pet stores come from puppy mills. Some actually do come from loving people. My pet store does only buy rabbits from only us, so they know where they come from and they actually have come and checked out our barn to make sure we are treating our rabbits with the greatest care we can. I guess the question is how much do you trust what your pet store says. It may be a private breeder, not necessarily a cruel, nasty puppy mill.
