  1. do you mean alaskan huskies?
  2. Siberian Husky No they don't need to be in the cold and snow but it's what they are made for. I have one and live in the desert and he does just fine. But I also provide good shelter ( from the heat and sun) plenty of water and I also brush him out every two days to pull the excess hair from his body. If its really hot I will have the groomer shave him to keep him cool.
  3. Siberian Husky. They can live in California, but are not a good breed for a novice dog owner.
  4. American eskimo dogs. You'd have to be a bit careful with them in warmer weather. Keep them inside with air conditioning and don't let them get too heated when they go out.
  5. 6 of them were Siberian Huskies and 2 of them were Alaskan Malamutes. They do better in colder climates but you can have them in California, you just need to keep them well hydrated, don't over work them, and air conditioning would also help them out. They do require a lot of daily exercise and aren't good with small animals such as cats. Don't listen to the person above me. They are not American Eskimo dogs. This is an American Eskimo dog.http://en.wikivisual.com/images/4/47/American_Eskimo_Dog.jpg This is a Siberian husky.http://www.husky-petlove.com/gal1-blk-huskymale.jpg And this is an Alaskan malamute. http://www.innovativeflashdesigns.com/breeder_website_design_search_engine_optimization/alaskan_malamutes/picture3.jpg
  6. They are Huskies. They are one of the breed with a double layer coat that enables them to withstand the cold. We have a Keeshond, another breed with a double coat, and she loves the cold snowy weather! In the summertime, when it's hot, she hangs out around the air ducts where the cool air from the air conditioner blows. They go through a big shed which is called "blowing their coat" when the weather changes. With proper care, they would probably do fine in California.
  7. Alaskan Malamutes or Siberian Huskies. Yes, they can live in warmer places, they just need to have shelter from the heat, lots of water etc. They also need to be brushed a lot to get out all the fur to make the double coat, which acts like a thermos, work properly. But, really, you shouldn't get a dog just because the breed was in a movie, you should get one because you want a dog and it fits in with your lifestyle. jukebox Jos, you NEVER shave a double coated breed, that's what the coat is for, to act like a thermos. Asides from shaving increasing the risk of sunburn heaps, since their skin isn't usually exposed to the sun, it also stops the double coat function, causing them to be hot while the coat is growing back. Also, the coat will most likely not grow back properly.
  8. Sled dogs. Huskeis. The movie Eight Below (which I cried so hard at by the way) is based on a true story. Those dogs were Sakhalin Huskies. Anyway, yes these breeds are used in Alaska but are also used through the world in cold climates. Since it's in their breeding, cold climates are usually better for these dogs. When they live in hot climates they need a lot more attention and maintenance to make sure they are healthy and not overheating, especially when you exercise with them in the summer. If you're concerned then look for another breed; this one may not be for you.
  9. In the movie eight below there are 8 dogs 2 Alaskan Malamutes and 6 Siberian Huskies. I suggest before you get a breed like this you do all the research you can do, as this breed of dog is not for everyone. They are an arctic breed and yes they do better in the colder states Calif is not the best weather for them, they blow coat like crazy they need allot of work and this is not a breed that you leave in a yard all day with nothing to do as they are a working dogs and they love just that to work. Do not get a breed of dog with out doing all the research you can, this may not be the breed of dog for you. ADD.. O my having a double coated breed shaved is the worst thing you can do for a dog as this can and will cause permanent coat damage, myth shaving a dog dose not make them cooler.
  10. Alaskan Malamutes/Siberian Huskies They will do fine in warmer weather. It does (shock) get in the 80s up here in Alaska. We've actually just been enjoying 60/70 degree weather. Just make sure you have plenty of space for them to exercise. They are high energy dogs, that should not be taken lightly. They need plenty of space to run and plenty of long walks. Please, please, please do not get a husky or malamute simply because you think that they are pretty dogs and you really want one. Put some research into it. There are so many people who get one of these dogs, and then realize that they do not have the ability, the energy, or the time to take care of them, and give them to the pound, or worse, just let them go. They can be absolutely wonderful dogs, as long as you make sure you spend that time with them.
