what distance can cat 5 cable be run from a router to a pc?

I have a pc attached to my TV, but the wireless signal seems to be erratic, causing pauses in video streams. Thinking of running cat 5 under house from cable modem and router to TV-PC. Distance is about 30 feet. Will this work?

  1. Should work. CAT5 can go 100M (about 330 feet)
  2. Yes... 30' is WELL within the length limitation. By specification, the longest you can run a single span of Ethernet cable is 328-feet (100-meters). Anything longer than that requires some kind of repeater. The only thing I would recommend is buying good plenum-grade cable... or running a PVC chase pipe underneath the house to protect the cable. Furry critters seem to enjoy the plastic material that encases the cable, and I'd hate for you to take the time to run the cable only to have it chewed through or otherwise damaged due to the elements. So... what you are going to do is an ideal solution. You're well within specs, and you should enjoy the benefits of a full 10/100 Ethernet connection!
  3. Max segment length for Cat5 cable is 100 metres
