What kind of dog looks like a golden retriever puppy?
I love golden retriever puppies (~3 to 6 months old), especially how their fur/hair is and how playful they are, but they get too big when they grow up as adults. I want to find a dog that basically looks and kind of acts like a golden retriever but stays small (~20 pounds max). What kind of dog would this be?

- The closest would probably be a Duck Tolling Retriever, or similar would be a Welsh Springer Spaniel, both are gundogs. #
- I'd suggest a Toller too, for looks, although I'm not sure about the similarity with temperaments between the two. Ditto for some of the Spaniel breeds, but their temperaments certainly are not the same as a Golden. But why don't you check a Rescue Centre because some mixes might fit what you are looking for?
- I would say that the Goldendoodle and the Golden Retriever have the most in common, but since the maximum weight you want to be is 20, I would prefer a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
- well if your wanting a purebreed i'd say go for a springer spaniel in gold they are adorable. but if you really want a mini retriever go to your local spca or animal shelter and check out the crossbreeds there.
- No such thing a s 20pound Golden Retriever! No repuable breeder would breed such a thing. Maybe a spaniel or maybe a Golden Retriever x Spaniel=ONLY from a shelter, pound or rescue because NO reptuable breeder ever BREEDS A MUTT. Spaniels come pretty close to retriever intelligent levels & most are pretty easy to train and despite there slightly smaller status, they are very playful and active, even if they don't look like a retriever at all. Cavalier King Charles=10-18pounds The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is best suited for a pampered indoor life. They display the temperament of an extrovert. They can be quite spirited and vocal. The Cavalier prefers to be with their family or other dogs. Although this breed is gentle and affectionate, they do not have patience for unruly children. English Toy Spaniel=9-12pounds The English Toy Spaniel is affectionate, friendly, gentle, and charming. This breed is loyal, devoted, and completely content to be with their family. They do well with older considerate children and other pets. English Toy Spaniel's are very social, non-demanding, quiet, and ideal family companions Japanese Chin=4-15pounds This breed is very intelligent, loving, and pleasant. They are also affectionate, mild mannered, and playful. The Japanese Chin is very adept at mirroring the moods of those around them. They are deeply devoted to their master and love everyone. With their gentle and sensitive demeanor, this breed is best suited for homes with older children. They are good with other dogs and pets. Although they are not an excessive barker, they make good watchdogs. They thrive on being the center of attention. This is a breed that is full of courage with a mind of their own. Graced with an excellent memory, they have definite likes and dislikes and never forget a friend or foe. The Japanese Chin, as a family pet is unrivaled. Border Terrier=11-16pounds Temperament: Friendly and playful, the Border Terrier is very affectionate and thrives on human interaction and attention. This breed is more placid than is typical of the other terrier breeds. They do best in a home with older considerate children. They will generally get along with other dogs but are not recommended for homes with cats or other small household pets. The Border Terrier does not do well if left alone for extended periods of time and will become destructive and bark excessively if bored or lonely. For this reason a two-career family is not an ideal situation for them. They are wary of strangers but are generally not aggressive. This breed is not recommended for the novice, apathetic or sedentary dog owner. Cairn Terrier=13-18pounds This breed is spirited and restless, always seeking an adventure. They are friendly and affectionate, bold and fearless. The Cairn Terrier loves to play and adores stimulation. They are loyal and alert and have a mischievous nature. The Cairn Terrier has a special affinity for children over the age of six. - I don't know if you've heard of the "Designer" Dogs but they're really cool! A lot of them are mixed with Poodles to cut down on shedding. The Goldendoodle is one of the cutest... I found a site with some info on them http://internetknowitall.com/blog/designer-dogs/
