Cross Breeds

What breeds of dogs do most shelters have?

I got my two dogs from a shelter. They are a miniature poodle, and a Chow Chow mix. But I don't really remember what other dogs were there (I was a little girl at the time). So are there generally certain breeds or what?

  1. labs and lab mixes are the number one breed euthanized in shelters.
  2. Pit bulls
  3. Dogs of all breeds and mixes find their way into shelters. Some breeds show up more than others and it varies by where you live and what dogs are popular there. We see a lot of pit bulls, labs and chihuahuas in our area. But any breed can show up in a shelter.
  4. It really sad but I'm Seeing MORE pit bulls in the shelters.
  5. mostly good old mutts. A lot of lab and lab muix pups, some pit bulls. A little bit of everything. Our closest shelter seldom has any toy dogs, mainly large breed dogs. The toy dogs are always adopted out fast unless they are old.
  6. It's a even chance for my shelters. May vary for others. I've heard labs, and pit bulls because people think they are ""vicious"". Even though they are AMAZING dogs!!! Anyways, Hope I ""somewhat"" helped ;)
  7. There are a lot of labs, but mostly (at least at the shelter i volunteer at), we have A LOT of pitulls. They are pretty common shelter guests because people always think that they are agressive, but their not!! <3Krystina
  8. most have labs, lab/mixes, but there are some other breeds, but not as many. go on the shelter website and find out what animals are available to adopt
  9. Well they do not have certain breeds but they will usually have pit bulls, mutts, and labs
  10. Lab retrievers, Aust. cattle dogs (heelers) and border collies are the most common purebred looking dog in the shelters in this area. The more common breeds in the area will be found in the shelters as a rule.
  11. Unfortunately, shelters tend to have dogs people can't keep anymore.. like big dogs that cost more to feed, hyper dogs that bark a lot, sick dogs that require money for a vet, and abused dogs who ran away for a good reason. They are all worthy of love in the right setting and home!
  12. Every time I go to the shelter in my area, SW FL it's mainly lab mixes, pit mixes, sometimes they have small breed mixes or german shepperd but not very often.
  13. Shelters commonly have "aggressive" dogs because they are put onto the street because the owners didn't want them. They also have very hyper breeds because many owners can't keep up with a dogs needs. The aggressive breeds are usually pit bulls or doberman dogs. The hyper dogs can be almost every breed. The shelters mostly have mixed breed dogs found on the street due to other stray dogs mating.
  14. They are bound to have what ever whateverpoo your heart desires
  15. Most common are labs, lab mixes, golden retriever mixes, tons of poodle mixes - bred to just about any other breed to make "non-shedding" dogs that shed and are dumped in the shelter. Also hound mixes (like beagle) would be another common, as well as shepherd mixes.
  16. Labs/Lab Mixes. APBTs and APBT Mixes follow closely behind.
  17. at my local shelter the most common dogs are Labradors :& Lab crosses Pitbulls & pit crosses Chihuahuas Poodles & poodle crosses (this is where a lot of those oodle designer dogs go) In these breeds there are about an even number of purebreds & crosses except the Chis there are more purebreds. This is a high kill shelter. Add: in response to one of the above answers. Most of the dogs are not aggressive. and the known aggressive dogs are not offered for adoption anyway.
