Cross Breeds

cross breed dogs - what do YOU call them?

Here in Australia we use terms like 'urban terrier' for a little terrier type mix and bitsa (bits of this and that) for a multi breed cross. Mongrel now seems to be politically incorrect and even mutt seems to be heading that way so what terms do you use? Is this a regional term (local to your area) or in common use? I have nothing against mixed breed dogs - some of my favourite dogs have been. Our first dog we described as a staffy x brown dog!! I guess I'm asking because of the 'doodle' craze - where every dog has to be called something. What's wrong with a dog being a just mongrel? It's not derogatory but the correct term i.e. an animal whose parentage is of unknown or mixed breeds as opposed to purebred.

  1. mutt..I do not understand why people think it is so degrading..Its a mutt no big deal, no reason to get upset for what the dog is.
  2. mix breed
  3. mutt--usa, indiana
  4. I call them mutts. But there are those that call them mixed breeds, hybrids, designer dogs, heinz 57 or mongrels.
  5. Most people I know call them "designer dogs" I am a dog groomer and i see EVERYYYY one of these dogs. I call them mutts! I luv mutts
  6. I have a purebred Lab and a terrier-mix that I couldn't even tell you what he is mixed with .. and I usually just call him a mutt. I don't see why people find it offending or anything, I mean he is a mutt, I love him dearly, but he's a mutt. :)
  7. I just say cross or mix... I hate the term Mongrel or Mutt. Im from Australia too, never heard the term Urban Terrier before or bitsa.
  8. Everyone i know in the dog business (i work with dogs, grooming, petstores, rescue), we usually just call the a "Mix" Like ohh look at that mix, or i wonder what kind of mix that is, you have a cute mix, what is it and so on. Really i never hear mongrol and mutt only when someones upset or annoyed and letting it out my insulting the dog lol, like "stupid mutt" never heard urban, or bitsa
  9. We use the turm "Mutt" or "Cross Breed"
  10. hybrids
  11. Im from AUS i just call them mutts or cross breeds. I do vet studies and i think they just use the term mutt.
  12. Mutt or "Heinz 57" I don't think either is degrading either. I'm in sunny California. =)
  13. I call them a mutt or just a mix. Nothing wrong with mutts, I hate when they start naming things like labradoodle or puggle. People think they are breeds when they aren't, they are just the same as most dogs in the shelter. I don't think mutt is bad, thats just what they are :) But around my area (ontario, canada) we call them mix breeds or a "insert likely breed here" cross.
  14. Mutt. Heinz 57. "Yep, that sure is a dawg!"
  15. Mutts- they are mixes of other breeds. I love them. You really get the best of both breeds.
  16. i call em rip offs! ppl are paying more for mixed breeds than pure breds..oh they're "designer"...its ridiculous! they're either called mixed or mutts..otherwise whatever the mix is, ppl have come up with their own crazy name for it
  17. in our area its mutt or heinz 57 although I really like your term bitsa .I've never heard of it before.
  18. mutt mix pound puppy - from the old cartoons and toys
  19. I just call them mutts or mix breeds. It just depends on who owns them. Some people get offended with the term mutt, not too sure why though. I own two mutts myself! Beagle and somethings ^_^
  20. Mutt, mongrel, Heinz 57, soup hound. The last two are definitely regional. I like the names you call them. They are kind of cute. Who cares anyway if you love them a pet is a pet weather or not it is purebred. Oh yeah we also call them purebred pets in my area.
  21. Mutt, mixed breed Both are pretty common.
  22. I just say mix or mutt. I hate the term 'designer dog' A mutt is a mutt. A cocker Spaniel mixed with a poodle is still a mutt, not a cock-a-poo, nor should one cost $600+ when most cockers go for $400 or less. A mutt should not cost much at all, nothing over $150 tops, and that's pushing it. I don't care if it stays below 5lbs. You're paying $900+ for a mutt that's so poorly bred that it stays well under the weight standard of either breed, has sooo many health problems, as well as a small life span. These dogs' skulls don't ever fully harden! As for the term hybrid, a hybrid is a cross of 2 species. If you mix a Hispanic with an Irish, you get multiracial, not a hybrid. I hybrid would be someone screwing a sheep and the sheep popping out a deformed anthropomorphic lamb/ human baby. The only 2 acceptable REAL dog hybrids are wolf hybrids, and Coy-dogs. Wolf+dog and Coyote+dog, both cases have 2 SPECIES Mutt, mix, mongrel, tramp, and other regional/country names are correct, not misled, or untrue names
  23. I just call them a mix bred. I would never call it a mongrel it just makes me think of some mutty mean looking dog running the streets, I also don't call them mutts either. I have always owned mix breed dogs and I love them. I have one now and she is the best ever! Also I would call them a cross breed. But just never mongrel or mutts.
  24. - Mixes - Mongrels - Mutts or the sweetest dogs I ever saw. I have three of those and they are the best dogs ever.
