Do people on here understand that if dogs stop being bred breeds will become extinct?

Many of you attack people for asking questions about breeding or asking questions about buying a puppy and you say that they should adopt instead. But do you ever stop to think that if dogs stop getting bred and everyone spays and neuters their pets, breeds would actually become extinct? Can you answer my question please? Angel, that is so true and I am wholeheartedly against bad breeding and puppymills, but many people here lash out without thinking.

1. I completely agree with you. I just got completely chewed out in another question for telling someone that it wasn't wrong of her to breed her dog. bunch of jerks in here.

There is a theory called the Brown Dog theory and that theory states that within 10 generations (I believe) of humans relinquishing control of breeding dogs that the majority of purebred breeds will die off from larger / aggressive breeds and that in the end the domestic dog will be a medium sized dog with erect ears, a tail that curls up over the back and will be found in color shades of brown. I am an advocate for maintaining the integrity of the purebred dog, but doing so responsibly.
5. I think most people attack dog breeders because most of them do it in an unkind manor. They breed the females too young or too often which is bad for their health and can be hard on their body's.

10. In all respect. Most people are stupid. Look at the lawsuits and warning signs. Look at how some people die. Warning do not use appliance in bathtub. I don't think spay or neuter is meant for you or you friends in the dog lover world. It's intended for the average person. I'm know enough to adopt a little friend and make sure he doesn't produce and add to the "homeless" problem and not knock people who breed and love pure breeds. Basically other people have no clue and need to be lead by the hand in everything. If someone who reads this is offended, show some respect this is just my opinion.
11. The likelihood that every domestic dog will be spayed or neutered is zero. Spaying and neutering pets is recommended because most people are not breeders, and do not want to deal with the hassle of taking care of litters of puppies. Ignoring the fact that we don't have to worry about dogs going extinct, there are many other reasons that people favor adoption over inbred purebloods. Genetically speaking, a mutt has a much greater chance of not being genetically disadvantaged than does, say, a purebred German shepherd. Typically speaking, shepherds are genetically inclined towards hip problems, do to the limited gene pools that breeders are able to draw from. Both have breathing issues due to their face shape.
12. Yeah. But do you understand that there are licensed breeders for that? Do you understand that the cat and dog population is booming with billions, if not trillions, of cats and dogs that it will probably take 100 years to even start to decrease? Do you understand that animals can get loose and end up pregnant or getting one pregnant, if not spayed or neutered putting increases to already over populated dog and cat population? Do you understand that not having an animal spayed or neutered puts them at a high risk for health problems in the future if not used? Do you understand that male dogs get more aggressive if not neutered? Do you understand that there are puppy mills out there where dogs are usually over bred which cause a very high increase in the dog population, and decreases the health of the dogs that are being over bred? Do you understand that puppy mills are usually hundreds of dogs over the legal limit? Do you understand that puppy mill dogs are never taken out of their cages unless it's to breed? Do you understand that most puppies sold in a pet store most likely come from puppy mills? Do you understand that there are animals in shelters that are going to be euthanized if they're not adopted? Do you understand that if people save one innocent life from being killed by adopting from a shelter is better than it dying and not having a chance at freedom or a life? Do you get this now? I'm not trying to be mean, smart or rude. I'm trying to get you to understand why people say that and to understand the truth.

14. 99% of the people asking breeding questions or that have pregnant animals on here have absolutely NO business breeding in the first place. I'm all for ethical and reputable breeding, NOT breeding just so you can have puppies, or to supply family and friend with pets or even so your kid can see the supposed miracle of life. Case in point early this evening a user cam on wanting to know why HALF her litter had died in 24 hours. Not one at a time mind you. This woman left her dam and newborn litter unsupervised while she went to a relative's house. Came home to SIX dead puppies and had the nerve to not only ask us for an answer but to claim the others were doing fine? How is THAT alright? I won't even get into the people who want to breed "teacup" or designer mutts. The minute you even try to educate these bybs and wannabe bybs they jump down OUR throats claiming they know what they are doing, when they obviously don't. Previous night - owner is on here dog is CLEARLY having trouble with her labor. Is she on the phone with a vet or better yet on her way to the vet? No she has her ass on YA looking for help in the WRONG place. Someone wants to learn how to be an ethical breeder? I'll point them in the right direction. The rest get what they deserve from me and the rest. We hear excuses like this " But I don't want to be a breeder. I just want my dog to have puppies" < Their excuse for not doing genetic testing, working or showing their dogs to a CH title or doing ANYTHING the right way. They can find someone else to help them because it sure as heck won't be me. ETA: looks like I ruffled the feathers of only 3 people. Damn I am losing my touch.

16. I'm not sure that there is a need for many of the breeds that we have today. For example, some were developed for use in bull and bear baiting. They are aggressive and are unsuited to living in the domestic environment. Often dogs of specific breeds have weaknesses caused by the very in-line breeding needed to create their particular characteristics. A mongrel dog of no fixed breed is a chance happening. Take any example of a mongrel. It would be possible using breeding techniques to make a pedigree dog that looked just like your mongrel. Your mongrel would then be considered to be a breed in its own right with a certificate to prove it. There is no benefit in having a particular breed of dog except to say that you have a dog just like your neighbour or you can create a club that specializes in them. (Working dogs of course are in a different catagory altogether). A dog is a dog is a dog. Just enjoy your dog whatever its shape or personality. A mongrel dog is special because there is no other dog that looks exactly like it. What could be more special than that? I'm always concerned when a working dog becomes part of the show dog scene. Giving a dog a 'breed standard' is the best way to ruin it. Many breeds have have had their features made too extreme which has caused the most awful health problems. My dogs have all been mongrels and they have been better for it.

A hundred people a day on both the dog and cat forum ask questions about breeding a five month old toy poodle to a six year old german shepherd and countless other asinine questions like that. If you bothered to READ the replies of most of the people who know what they're talking about they don't say NEVER breed. They say ONLY breed when you've done certain things. Those certain things include getting a mentor and learning the breed standard and whelping process BEFORE you breed. People on here breed their pets together and then come on here asking us what to do. NONE of us are against REPUTABLE, PROPER breeding of Pure bred dogs. We are against people who: 1-Breed for money 2-Breed so their dogs can have "just one litter" 3-Breed so their kids can witness the miracle of birth. 4-Breed mutts and sell them for ridiculous amounts of money 5-Breed low quality purebreds who haven't been proven. 6-Breed when they have NO money saved up for emergency vet bills and then come on here when the bitch is bleeding to death and ask it how to fix it themselves. 7-Let their dogs "accidentally" get pregnant because they were to lazy or cheap to spay/neuter them 8-Do NO research, don't get a mentor, don't go to shows and only breed their dogs cause they're "pretty" 9-Breed temperamentally and conformationally unsound dogs. 10- Breed their bitch to a dog twice her size 11- Ask it its ok to breed their bitch to her son, or her brother or her father. 12- Breed without doing ANY genetic testing. 13- Breed without doing ANY genetic testing, whelp a blind puppy and then breed again. 14-Who allow their cats to free roam and get pregnant by a feral who also gives her FIV and FeLV cause her AND her kittens to die. 15- Who think dogs have periods. 16- Who don't know what whelp means. 17- Who use mud in the whelping box and leave their puppies outside in the winter cause their mother or spouse won't allow them inside. 18-Who don't sell on spay/neuter contracts or don't even know what a spay/neuter contract is? 19- People don't give a shit about the puppy after it's left their house and allow to end up in a shelter. 20- People who think its fun to watch their animals mate. 21- People who have no clue that spay/neutering their animals saves them from a bunch of cancers. 22- People who don't know what Pyometra is. 23- People who think its ok to yank out a puppy lodged in the birth canal. 24- People who breed sickly runts to sickly runts to make really tiny dogs and call them teacups. 25- People who breed two dogs together that will serve no purpose and slap a cutesy "designer" name on it and sell it for $3000. 26- People who allow their dog to breed every heat cycle. 27- People who allow their cat to breed over and over and over. 28- People who breed with NO regard for the health and well being of the animals and breed sickly dogs riddled with health problems. 29-People who's bitch dies during whelping and have NO idea how to hand rear a litter. 30- People who's bitch dies during a litter and don't WANT to hand rear a litter. 31- People who separate puppies from the mother at FIVE weeks old causing severe separation anxiety and poor social skills. 32- People who breed their animals and THEN come on here and ask us how long the gestation is and what are the symptoms of feline or canine pregnancy. 33- People who "Think" they're cat or dog is pregnant but don't want to take it to the vet to find and instead want some magical way to find out at home because they have no money. 34- People who breed their animals and THEN come on here and ask us how to take care of a pregnant cat or dog and what to feed it. Would you like me to go on? 30 Million Dogs and Cats and Puppies and Kittens are MURDERED in shelters in the United states and Canada alone EVERY year. The ONLY people who should be breeding are the people who do it PROPERLY. As long as those people exists, which they will there will always be animals. Those people who've dedicated their lives to rescue and proper breeding are entitled to get angry and frustrated when they see questions like that. ANYONE who asks questions about breeding on here is NOT ready to be breeding and we're SICK of all the animals being put to death thanks to these half wits. ADD: Dogs have a standard for a reason. So they can be bred to the standard that will best allow them to perform the task they're being bred for. What good would a Siberian husky with long hair, no fur between the pads of his feet, who was velcroed to their owner and had weak chest muscles be? Their purpose is to pull sleds, the standard is there to make SURE they are bred with the necessary requirements to properly perform the task.

19. If the majority of breeders are idiots, then the breed will eventually get so watered down, they're basically extinct anyway. There's no more fox hounds that hunt, no more rotties that work, no dachshunds that will go down a ground hog hole and kick butt. So, you have imposters looking like extinct breeds already. If they come on and ask, "what does it take to be a breeder"? What will qualify me to be a breeder? Who should I talk to about becoming a breeder? That's all fine. When they come on and ask, "My yorkies are tied...how much should I charge for the puppies"? They need to be shot. Or, I NEEEEEED to "STUD OUT" my AKC, full BREADED, Pedigree St. Bernard, because he has champion bloodlines and I want a puppy. Where do I find a female to BRED to? Someone needs to stop them in their tracks....or at least try. The U.S. needs a TRUE registry that actually "polices" breeders and breeding. Breed wardens that are monitoring who's breeding to who. AKC has plenty of money "non-profit" or not. Another registry could put it to use trying to preserve a breed instead of simply "recording" what is sent to them.
