Cross Breeds

is it possible to have a labrador with a coat color have puppies of different color?

like imagine you have two black labs is it possible to ahve a chocolate or yellow colored one and so on and if you cross breed different colors likewise what would happen Extra Question What is the big difference between a golden and labrador retriever and is there some sort of mix breed between them and what are the major way of distuinguishing a lab having a color similar to a golden retriever

  1. Yes, its from the past generations...........of breeding
  2. labs can have any color like black chocolate or yellow they just do lol
  3. It's possible. It depends on the genes of the parents, and their parents, and so on. You have to know which dominant genes are being passed down to the puppies.
  4. Two black labs can produce both yellow and chocolate puppies. Originally all labs were black. Golden retrievers have much longer hair then labrador retreivers. If you see a yellow lab next to a golden retriever it is very easy to see the difference.
  5. animals arent like people, we get out colours from either mum or dad, they can have colours of their great great great grand dad or further! so if you have to black labs, you might get a black or you might get a yellow, luck of the draw really!
  6. WELL...LETS REFER BACK TO THE GOOD 'OL PUNNENT SQUARES!!! BOTH BLACK LABS MAY CARRY THE RECESSIVE GENE FOR GOLD OR BROWN... OR MAYBE JUST ONE LAB THERE IS A POSSIBILITY YOU MAY END UP WITH DIFFERENT LAB COLORS.... UNLESS THE BLACK COLOR IS DOMINANT (PUREBRED)
  7. Yeah it is possible. It depends on its ancestery though and how the dominant and recessive genes are put together.
  8. Yup - two black labs can have a yellow or chocolate pup. As for the second part of your question, google images of yellow labs and golden retrievers; the answer will soon become obvious as to the difference in their looks.
  9. Its all basic genetics. And depends on the males breed. Or if the mom is a light color like gold, and the male is a dark color like black, the puppys fur will be a mix, the black will fill in the gold, all the the DNA genetics.
  10. yes. Depending on past generations they can have white, yellow, red, chocolate, and black colors. there are only 3 official colors though. Whites and red would be registered at yellow.
  11. Yes, labs can have different color pups from the parents. The chocolate labs are a dilute variety and they do require special breeding set up to achieve. A golden retriever and a lab are not very much alike. The golden has longer silky hair. The lab has short dense harsher hair. The lab is stockier, more muscular and loves loves loves water. The golden is leaner and is better suited to hunting in the field. They don't have similar personalities, the golden generally being a friendlier, freer dog, the lab being a bit more reserved, atheltic and serious dog. The coat of a lab is nothing at all like the coat of a golden so telling the difference should not be a problem. The goldens are softer by far, have a longer coat and it is usually wavy or somewhat feathered. Great picture of well bred golden retrievers... notice the long wavy coats: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/goldenretriever.htm Now see the lab with the serious demeanor and the shorter harsher coat and heavier features: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/labrador.htm
  12. Yes. Two black labs can produce yellow or chocolate offspring. It is really complicated like from parents or whatev there is dominant or recessive genes or somethin like that. Goldens have long fur and labradors have short fur. Just look at their fur length. Goldens were actually originated from flat-coated retrievers. They were black or liver colored and sometimes a golden puppy was produced. Most times this golden puppy was thrown out or even killed but then a guy came and started breeding golden pups. So Goldens are actually golden flat coated retrievers. But the difference is that goldens have long wavy hair.
  13. a lab retriever and a golden retriever are similar in name because they both retrieve...but they are two different breeds... if you have a lab and the colors come out different in puppies...then somewhere there was inter breeding of colors...but most breeders will no do it since it messes up the line and reduces the value to sell the dogs... the differences between these two breeds are many ...contact the American Kennel Club for specific answers....and if you're thinking of mixing the breeds perhaps you should realize that your only making a mess...
  14. Of course two black labs can have puppies that are different colors, It's in the colour genetics. Dogs can carry a recessive colour gene, and as long as both dogs carry that recessive, they will produce that color. Talk to your breeder about coat colors Goldens and Labs are two entirely different breed. Golden retrievers have a longer coat, different body type, head etc. Golden Retrievers are an entirely different breed of dog than a Yellow Labrador.
  15. Of course! Dogs get theyre genes from theyre grandparents. Forexample, if the father has brown eyes and the mother has blue eyes, Brown eyes are dominent genes, so the baby would get brown eyes, but the recessive genes(blue eyes) are still there, so the babies kid could get the blue eyes! understand? if your still confused let me know!
  16. Yes it is possible. If both black Labradors are each carrying an E (esbiatic) gene there will be yellow pups in the litter. Because black is a dominant color , yellow and chocolates do not carry the B (black) gene. So if you are breeding two yellow Labs or two chocolate Labs. You will never get black puppies in the litter. If you were to breed a chocolate and yellow you could get chocolate and yellow pups. If you were to breed a yellow and a black you could get chocolate, yellow and black. If you were to breed a chocolate and black you will could black and chocolate. There are alot of possiblities but they strongly depend on which genes the parents are carrying. As for the extra question, The difference between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever are great both physically and temperamentally. The only way you will have some sort of mix between them is if you breed them both together to have offspring. Here is a picture of a Labrador/Golden Retriever mix: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images15/LabradorGoldenRetrieverMixinTraining.JPG See how it has a medium-longer coat length. A pure Labrador will always have a shorter coat length. Some people often mistake Labradors with a golden color with the actual mix between a Labrador and Golden Retriever but a yellow Labradors coat can range in many different shades. It can be very pale (almost white) to a fox red color. Again, It all depends on the genes of the parents.
  17. Yes, it can be possible because of the dogs genentics. Labs and Goldens are distinguished by their coats. Labs are known for having a short coat. Goldens are known for a long coat. Labs normally come in black, yellow, or chocolate... its really hard to find one similar to a golden retriever...
  18. a golden retreiver is a totally different breed than a lab.. they differ in many ways.....www.akc.org learn the breed standards yes labs can have different colored pups.... GENETICs ,, must study and know them
  19. In most breeds black is a dominant coat color. Depending on if both the black dogs have a recessive color allele in the gene pair then yes you can get different coat colors. There is a second set of alleles called dilution alleles too that vary coat color. Dilution genes are what make (black) dogs grey or (brown) dogs that yellow fawn color. The dog has a Black coat gene, but if it also has a dilution set then it dilutes the black so that the dog is gray. With yellow dogs they have a Brown coat color gene, but the dilution set makes it fade to yellow. Canine genetics is facinating if you take time to study it. If you are looking for a certain coat that you want bred into your dogs, study the genetic characteristics behind it, and choose dogs to carry in those genetic combinations you desire.
