why do cats do the funny gesture with their mouth and make funny noises when watching birds?

We get a kick out of watching them ...their mouths shake as if they can't control it and they meow real funny...if they were hunting woudn't they try to stay silent?

2. Hmm..i wonder if your cats trying to mimick the sound of the birds? maybe the cats not to swift and is trying to convice the birds he is one of them..so he can get in close enough to pounce.. No idea..my cats never done that before.
3. Both of my cats do this all the time! I think they are just excited and want to go out and hunt the birds, which is pretty normal for a cat.
4. My cats do this as well and I think it is so cute. When a cat sees something it wants but can't get to it they do this. I have never read anywhere why they do it. So far, this is believed to have no function.
5. They are hungry?
