Why do Dogs and cats hate each other so much?

I am doing a QUEST for my Gifted and Talented Language Arts class. The question I am trying to answer is why dogs and cats hate each other so much, but observation doesn't seem to be getting me very far. Does anybody no why this is (not the observation thing, but the thing about the cats & dogs.

1. sometimes they do get along..but sometimes they don't. maybe it's just their instinct, they attack when they feel threatened.
2. Not all dogs hate cats. It depends on if they were socialized when they were young. Dogs have what's called "prey drive." It the urge to hunt, basically. Dogs are hunters, cats are prey.
3. Mine don't, I have 12 dogs and 2 cats and they all get along just fine, even sleep together. My big male cat sleeps out in kennel with most of the dog and my Queen kittie stays in house with my service dog Jake
4. i have 1 dog and 2 cats the dog gets along with both of the cats but one of the cats does not like either the other cat nor the dog! i think it all depends on the animal.
