Is there a website that provides information on types of dogs in shelters available for adoption?

If someone wants a specific type of dog but doesn't want to buy one from a backyard breeder but instead wishes to save the life of a shelter dog, is there any place they can turn to in their search? My shelter has been put on notice as to what I am looking for but we live in a small town. So short of calling every shelter, is there a website that consolidates this type of information?

4. Absolutely! http://www.petfinder.org I've been browsing this site for years - you can find a new dog, kitty, potbellied pig or guinea pig to add to your family, across the whole United States. You can even find horses and goats for adoption here - really, anything that needs a home and is in a shelter or rescue is listed for adoption here.
5. http://www.petfinder.com/ You can put in your location and it will give you a whole list of dogs in the shelters around you. If you are looking for a specific breed/mix, age, size, etc. You can also put this information in and it will give you a list of dogs that meet those specifics. I think petfinder is a great site. It has helped me many times.
