Cross Breeds

Why are some breeds of dog more expensive than others?

I'm talking pedigree dogs and not cross breeds. I had a thought once that it may be like, the more of the dog, the more you pay but this isnt the case when you think of the price of chihuahuas and bulldogs etc. So does anyone know why?

  1. A lot of things go into the cost of obtaining a dog from a breeder. High demand will increase cost, plus better breeding practices cost more so you will see a large difference in price within a breed as well. Reputable breeders have well-raised dogs, have completed all recommended health screening before mating (that costs money) their dogs and provide good veterinary care for their animals. Generally, a well-bred dog also comes from parent dogs that are shining examples of the breed, so a lot of money has been put into raising, training and showing that line. The price tag alone really does not mean anything about the quality of the breed, especially with the overprevalence of puppy mills and backyard breeders who breed for profit. Those dogs may cost several hundred dollars and come with fake/worthless pedigrees (to dupe the uneducated consumer) and poor vet care. It's always important to learn about a breed first to see if it matches with your lifestyle, and then start learning about breeders in your area or reputable rescue groups in your are. A good rescue group will be upfront with you about what you are getting into when you rescue one of their dogs (remember, they want the dog to have a FOREVER home, not be dumped again).
  2. I'd think because they are more popular and 'cuter'. They make the breeds that are 'good with children' ( any dog that isn't soicalized properly can have problems with kids )
  3. because people wanting a pup will pay it. I have seen pups for sale the breeder saying they are rare colours when they are not -asking high prices
  4. 1. Health checks and clearances. Chihuahua's should have patellar luxation tests, hips, eyes, and ears checked. Some tests have to be repeated every few years. Some dogs also need their hearts checked. 2. Whelping. Some dogs like Great Danes and Bulldogs require C-sections because their heads have been bred too big for a natural birth. This is an expensive procedure that gets passed on to the buyer. 3. Supply and demand. If Chi's are the new "in" dog the price is going to go up because people will pay that much for the dog. FYI, a good breeder that is more concerned about a good home for the dog than padding their wallet will ignore #3.
  5. The demand for the dogs, and their popularity.
