Greyhound races...Yes or NO?

I was watching the news today and they were talking about this lady who rescues greyhounds who have been left in the street to die.Some of these greyhounds were so skinny you could see there ribs.It was so sad.They were all race dogs who were either to old or injured and could not race.Now while I understand that not everyone is that cruel these dogs do get hurt while racing.Some end up with broken bones one dog even died at the finish line.So do you think that these rces should go on.I know that dogs love to run but this is extreme.Who agrees and disagrees and why

  1. I do not agree with greyhound races they can get seriously injured and they do
  2. Greyhound racing is a horrible, cruel, vicous "sport". The dogs are kept in terrible, unsocial conditions, fed dreadful stuff to try to make them faster, and then killed or dumped when they are no more use. No civilized nation would tolerate this anymore than bullfighting or cockfighting. Any kind of dog racing needs to be outlawed. If you have any kind of love of dogs, boycott all greyhound racing or anything to do with it.
  3. I don't see greyhound racing yes or no as related to the incidence you're speaking about. Racing is not in itself a cruelty, as you've acknowledged, for these breeds its a thing of joy. Cruel and inhuman treatment and abandonment of animals is a serious issue, and needs to be dealt with as such. It is not that these are ex-racing dogs that's the problem, it's that the dogs were formerly owned by abusive humans that is the problem.
  4. I think no because in today's world people are very competitive and it tends to get too extreme and the dogs are in terrible pain if they stumble because they are quite delicate. I know that could wreck peoples dreams and what they think they where born to do, but they have to think about the dogs welfare and health. People should do small private races if they still want them to do it. But no where near what is happening today. Just my opinion
  5. I think the sport is ok, the ratio of dogs who get hurt is actually quite low, but they need to create regulations concerning how the dogs are treated after they retire form racing.
  6. I feel for Greyhounds cause that they have to put them down if no owners do not want one.... SOB =+{
  7. they have been breed for generations to race and run- that is what they do. What we need is more people who are willing to give these loving dogs homes after they are done with racing. We had a retired racer for 10 years and loved her dearly. I would be afraid if these breed was no longer raced- they would die out- In over 10 years of vet medicine I have only ever seen 1 greyhound pup- it was born with a deformed leg and could not race- so it was adopted by a family
  8. Its a disgusting cruel and abusive industry. Thousands of greyhounds go 'missing' each year with no record of what happened to them and those in the industry not caring. Dogs have been found with their ears hacked off, dumped with muzzles on so they cannot eat, starved to death and in Spain the really nice tradition of hanging them Boycot racing and save lives please http://www.greyhoundaction.co.uk/
  9. I don't like to hear the way these poor Greyhounds are treated and the lousy conditions they live in and I don't like Greyhound Racing. I think they should make it Against The Law! These poor dogs are abused and in my opinion it needs to be stopped!
  10. I think the sport itself is fine, it's enjoyable for the dogs. But it's the people that get so crazy about their dog winning who ruin the sport for the dog.
  11. No.... most of the time... if the dogs don't race or aren't fast enough.... they are killed..... mostly hung.....like dog fighting it should be abolished..... a capital crime.... and just take a look.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tLAtBG__bY&feature=related
  12. Its not the races themselves but the treatment (or lack thereof) of the animals and the conditions in which they live. If racing was highly regulated with strict and enforced rules abut what you could and could not do with a dog and how dogs were 'retired' there would be less of an issue. But since its not its has become a sport that is cruel, inhumane and deadly.
  13. There ARE small scale amateur races mostly for fun, dogs go home & sleep on the bottom of the bed.... And yeah somewhere there even developed a tradition of bring a CAKE to a meet to celebrate dogs sweet 16 birthday (yeah they are all retired by then but still sleeping on the bottom of same bed) and Grey's are by nature a lean breed -you SHOULD be able to see a rib or two AS for hurt - a member of my club has a dog crippled for life FALLING OUT OF THE BED, another had to violate speed limits to the ER clinic before the dog bleed to death from a puncture cause by a kicked up stick! Another had a dog break a toe in agility. Yet another crippled himself chasing a chipmunk into a bush ... gee lets wrap all dogs in cotton wool (dull life hugh)oh and then their hearts go their tendons sag till the dog is crippled - hobs choice neither dogs or people live forever PS the number of greys abandoned is dwarfed by the number of PET dogs abandoned (often in the street) and put down so clearly keeping of pets is inhumane and should be abolished (same logic)
  14. I think they should be banned.The laws have changed as most owners of these dogs would kill them if they wer'nt winners or did'nt race fast enough.Now they have deals with the rescue groups that when they are done with them they can come and take the dogs to train them and get them a home.They are beautiful dogs and to see them in person and to see how regal they are you wonder why anyone would want to do this to them.
