approximately what is the cost of adopting a retired greyhound racing dog?
Public Comments
- around 600 dollars
- That's cool, good for you I adopted a dog from the shelter as well. I have a friend that recued a greyhound and they are cool dogs. Bummer other then the racing tracks you don't see them around much after that. Thanks for rescuing a dog!!
- What country are you in? My mum used to know someone who used to rescue them in England as a lot of them would be put down or just killed out right after they got too old etc to run a race. You could look at The Bath Cats & Dogs Home if you're in England, they always have dogs looking for a new loving home or google adopting greyhounds or something. Good luck : )
- maybe 250
- Assuming you already have all the supplies a dog needs for it's living conditions it will cost you little to no dollars There are numerous 'Farms' for retired and breeding Greyhounds and if you acquire them directly it's usually free
- The price is probably pretty high because it was a racing dog and those are usually pretty high priced.
- for the neccessities such as food, a bed, bowls, toys, and a lead, it would cost about £100 for the year maybe less depending opn what brand and what size of food you get. (I get an enormous bag of Barkers dry dog food and it lasts for months and costs about £15-£20 and is really good value for the amount you get). However, you will need to pay for vet check ups and possibly for any emergency treatment should the dog need it and that could cost up to a few hundred pounds. But spaced over the course of a year you won't even notice the amount of money you are spending. It is DEFFINATELY worth it though- greyhounds are lovely dogs and there are so many that need rehoming so i hope you do adopt one =] Hope this helped x Oh and just incase you didn't know, greyhound rescue centres normally will give away the dogs for free to loving homes, but for a small donation towards the centre towards the running costs.
- The different rescue groups all around the country all charge different prices, so you should google greyhound rescue wherever you live. You have to remember that the price of the dog always includes the price of the spay/neuter, vaccinations, health check, dental and anything else health related that the dog needs. So if, for example, the cost of the dog is $300, you're getting a bargain because the dog's already spayed or neutered, has had his shots, teeth cleaned, etc. And you get a great companion!
- Every adoption charity has diferent criteria for homing a greyhound. Some ask for a donation, whatever you can afford, some have a suggested minimum (maybe £25), should not be more than £200. If the animal has not been neutered or speyed, this costs from £50 for a boy to £150 for a girl. You will need a VERY soft and comfy bed for the greyhound. I suggest a single duvet (not down or they will eat it, Yum!), folded in 3 inside a duvet cover or make a cover out of a few meters of fleece, or you can buy a fleece cover from some pet shops for around £15 to £20, make sure its the right size for the folded duvet. duvet around £15. If you dont want your dog sleeping on your bed, be firm with it, and supply a second bed for upstairs. Greyhounds crave company. Ours is fine left on her own during the day. You will also need a rain-proof, warm coat as they have no fat, and get cold quickly and easily. about £15 to £25. Water and food bowls need to be on a stand, again you can buy theese from a good pet shop, dont pay more than £20 for bowls and stand. simple metal is better than plastic, stronger and sturdier. They nee to have a stand as they cant bend down to reach a bowl on the floor. So, say about £50 to £100 for equipment. Up to £150 if needs speying or neutering. And a donation to the charity. Will not cost you more than buying any other dog from a breeder, but much much more rewarding!!!!! Our's has brought us so much joy :)
- I live in the Us and have rescued several greyhounds... and have been in contact with main rescues organizations... and most from around are approximately $200 to $300 this cost is just the adoption fee... it covers the food the shelter has provided, for the altering of the dog and just kennel boarding... every racer we have adopted has also had its shots at the kennel and had its vet checks... but all rescues will be different Most are none profit and will only charge what cost they have put into the dogs...
