Why do people pay £100's for cross bred dogs with posh names?
A few years ago you struggled to give away cross bred dogs, now some Toffs have given them names like Labradoddle(labrador/poddle) and Sprocker(springer/cocker) and every numpty is paying £700 for them. Don't get me wrong i love dogs but i think some people are taking the p**s with the price. I am sure they are lovely dogs and great pets but where do the breeders get off selling them for more than a pedigree dog?

- Because idiots buy them. As long as stupid, uneducated people continue to want them, the "breeders" will continue to churn them out.
- I know especially when the same people can get themselves a fancy cross breed dog (also known by the name Mutt) at your local rescue shelter for $75. Suddenly someone breeds a mutt and calls it a "designer hybrid" I have to laugh when someone tells me they got a Maltipoo, I have to refrain from saying you mean a mutt?
- Most *everyone* in this section is wondering the exact same thing. Go to the shelter, people! The EXACT same mix is waiting for a home there...and for an adoption fee! Save a life....and $. How can you say no?
- It's completely wrong. They are more expensive then what i paid for my Champion Bloodline Boston Terrier! Most of them at Puppy Millers that will do ANYTHING to make a buck! also irresponsible BYB's.
- Fashion. Anyways cross breeding dogs is a good idea coz it keeps the gene pool mixed and deep (even tho i have a german shepherd pedigree)
- I dont have an answer, just gave u a star for 'Labradoodle', my new favourite word :-)
- Because of the 'marketing' of it really. It's the newest 'cool' thing, and as such, everyone wants it. Just as we see animals such as iguana's and sugar gliders suffer from being a 'cool' fad pet, so are these designer dogs. It is a practice largely based on ignorance, and beyond that based on apathy - I spend time trying to educate, and do reach some people, but others just honestly don't care. A pet is important to them for how they make them feel - not for the responsibility that they need to have as a guardian of a animal. Just a note here - hybrid vigor is only a first generation thing - for example when one pure bred and another are mixed to form the first mixed breed. After that the effects are negligible.
- More money than sense?
- I think it's a bit like the art world. If you can get everyone believing they're worth it then they are. Then again - the word "pedigree" is fictional because every dog is a cross breed if you think about it.
- Because they can. It's called choice. What people do with their own cash is their business, not yours. Get a grip.
- people are stupid enough to buy them.. they beleive some of the lies about these dogs, like "hypoallergenic".. "doesnt shed".. "hybrid vigor-healthier than a purebred"... and "they are a new breed, AKC is going to accept them soon!"
- They got to much money like they say easy come easy go.
- Fools and their money ........................... They do no research, believe that crossbreeds will be more healthy & that this Pekapoopomadoodle is exactly what they want & not available in any of the nearly 200 recognised breeds in the UK!! Years ago when new breeds were been developed for genuine reasons, usually to do a specific job of work, those pups which didn't come up to standard and didn't have the characteristics the breeder was trying to produce were GIVEN away. But people had a lot less money in those days & weren't daft enough to think that a mutt had any monetary value at all!
- where did it come from, well let me tell you, when every little skinny non-talented actress coming out of Hollywood started carrying around multipoos, and every other type of mixed breed dog and dressing them up, with fancy smancy cutesy names, and all of our little 12,13,14, yr old teen girls had to have so called pocket purse dogs one to. I have raised and shown standard poodles for 30 yrs and before i would allow one of them to cross with another breed i would have them put to sleep.
- becauseit sounds posh
- I think they might become pedigree, by the way people buy them too. I am a dog lover, but I agree!
- It's more than some pedigree dogs, but not all. The pup I have booked is from one of the best Doberman kennels and will be £900.00. Other pedigree dogs from the better kennels are more than that. It's a simple case of supply and demand; if people are willing to pay and the demand is there, people will breed the dogs. Some will health test their dogs, others will not carry out all the tests that they should. It is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure that they are happy with the breeder and the pup.
- Yey, finally someone has put it out there. Fashion, in a word. Market it right, stick a silly name on it and sell it to ignorant dumbasses who want a cool "purebred" dog. People aren't aware of the nature of the way these puppies came into the world, or the ethics that good breeders adhere to (health tests etc), they just want a cute puppy and aren't willing to look into rescuing a poor dog in need of a home.
- It is a piss take, they are mutts basically. I have a mutt..she came from the shelter. I wouldnt pay thatamount of money for a mutt as i know better but alot of 1st time dog owners dont that actually think labradoodles and sprockers are breeds! Its crazy!
- We once sold our puppies for £250 each! http://youtube.com/watch?v=r2CdsBCpS0A An "example" of one we kept! We have also sold cats for £60!! People pay it, so what?
- I totally agree, but... They are paying loads for them because they are the new fashion accessory, or, to show of you've got some dosh. E.G; 'Oh, deary, I bought a Labradoodle today, £800! I thought, well, you know what Heat is saying about them!' 'Oh, lovely, but I bought a Sprocker yesterday for just £1000! They are all the rage in OK!' You see what I mean? Like a competition for who can spend the most on the dog with the stupidest name. Breeders sell them for that much because if they know the right people, they know they can sell them for that price. They might be mutts, but if they have a name that bimbo celebs or people who have 'The bank shouldn't of given me a credit card' across their foreheads, can't understand, you can guarantee they will go for some money. Oh, yeah, and that thing that someone said about going down to the shelter for one much cheaper? How do you think it got there in the first place? Some idiot went and bought one, got bored of it, abused it, then chucked it out. Sorry to say that, but it happens. I'm sorry for ranting...It gets me...Well, I think anyone who does it is a right idiot.
- Because people are clueless and have money to burn. Read my question and look at the link i put up..... SHOCKING! http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ao.K3AKDu0W1374_NafzoUogBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080529145001AA4oQ6H
- I agree with you entirely but the bottom line is, something is 'worth' what someone else is prepared to pay for it. For instance, the house i bought at 76 grand is now 'worth' over 300 grand - 'worth' solely because that is what some one would pay for it. In point of fact, no way is it actually 'worth' that money. A large number of todays pure breds originally came about by cross breeding to get to a particular aim. BUT the aim of the present glut of 'designer' dogs is just MONEY. If someone is dumb enough to pay hundreds of pounds for a crossbreed then there is always going to be 'breeders' happy to take their cash. To my mind, this trade says a lot more about the people who buy them than the people who breed them! The old saying about a fool and his money being easily parted comes to mind.
- I know, it's a cheek. A neighbour of mine ended up with an accidental litter of Yorkie x dachsunds, and the cheeky cow sold them for £600 each, which is MORE than the thoroughbred of either breed costs.Still, she got away with it, and people were glad to pay the price, as they WERE extremely cute!!!
- cos there are a lot of stupid muppets out there that will pay silly money for what is a mutt, they say they are pedigree but they are NOT , just cross breeds that normaly you get in local papers for £50 , not £7-800
