Is this dog a Great Pyrenees mix (read all)?
My fiance and I bought a dog about 5 months ago. We know that he is a mix breed and a large breed mix, but we aren't entirely sure what kind of breed. I have posted this question before but I didn't add information about him that could have helped tell what breed he is. He looks like a Great Pyrenees besides his color. What do you think? Any ideas are welcome. Keep in mind his size...he is only 6 months old. His Body - - - He is 6 months old and he weighs 56 pounds. He stands about 2 feet tall on all fours. His tail curves nicely and is slightly feathered. He has a very thick coat (very soft, kind of wavy). The fur around his ears looks as though it has been crimped. He has a reddish colored fur and a little bit of black in his tail. His paws are white. His snout is wide and he has a black nose. His eyes are brown and around them, it looks almost like he is wearing eyeliner. His Temperament - - - He has an excellent temperament and is very intelligent (at one month he learned how to sit within a matter of days and was house trained within about two weeks). He has a very independent nature. He is great with other dogs (even smaller ones). He is good with our 20 month old son. He loves playing with us and other animals. He is loving and affectionate when he's not playing or sleeping. When he is in the house, he is calm and collected. Characteristics - - - He seems to get hot very easily, even in cool weather. He drools and slobbers every time he drinks (excessively). He loves snow and cool temperatures. He has a tendency to chew on things and he digs a lot. His Family - - - We bought him from a pet store and all I know is that he had two sisters, one was white and one was black. On his cage it said that he was a Border Collie / Sheltie mix but there is absolutely no way due to his massive size. - Golden Retriever(definetly) /Border Collie (maybe) mix. I am not seeing the Great Pyrenees.
- Cute. Actually the breeds the pet store sounds pretty accurate. He has the body of a border collie and the color from a sheltie. He might just be maturing quickly. He probably wont get too much bigger. His body characteristic is not similar to a great Pyrenees at all. His temper also seems to reflect the border collie.
- could be a golden retriever/great Pyrennes mix. He is beautiful! I know it sounds silly but his feet look like a GP's feet. Was his dew claws removed? Does he have double dewclaws?
- Golden retriever, border collie. He is not near big enough to have GP and I see no characteristic of a GP......sorry
- It is extremely unlikely that your dog is a Great Pyrenees mix. Honestly, he looks like a golden retriever mix in those pictures and the physical description also sounds like a golden mix. At 6 months and 56lbs he is a big dog, but he is not a giant dog and not likely to be nearly as big as you seem to think he will be full grown. At that size and age he is likely to be under or just barely above 100lbs fully grown and even though golden retrievers are supposed to be smaller than that according to the breed standard there are a lot of "super-sized" goldens out there that are right in that ballpark. The fact that one sibling was white and one was black doesn't mean anything with a mixed breed dog...the three puppies could even have different fathers.
- doe he have double dew claws on his back feet? All pure bred great pyrs have this....and if he does then yes he has pyr, if not..you back to guessing...lol I don't see anything that stand out as pyr though, and I breed them.....
- i don't see any pyrenees. golden retriever maybe
- I agree - I don't think border collie and sheltie at all. His size, temperament, coloring, snout, feet and ears....I am saying St. Bernard and Lab mix (due to the black) - he has lab ears, snout and head (I have owned labs). They can also be mistaken for goldens. The fur, size, color, and feet remind me of my friends St. Bernards.
- I don't see any resemblance for your dog to be a Border Collie/Sheltie mix. Or even a Great Pyrenees. I would have to say He is a Golden Retriever/Border Collie Mix.
- Great pyraneese are huge and white Yours looks like a Nova Scotia Duck Toller Retriever.
- He kinda looks a bit like a Novia Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever http://www.pets911.com/breeds/dogs/images/breeds/nova-scotia-duck-tolling-retriever.jpg
- I don't see any potential for border collie in this dog. And between BC and sheltie, he should have had more white on him. His weight at this age makes pyr very possible as to part of his parentage. I'd guess golden / pyr mix. If you join my yahoo group, there are photos of some member's dogs and yours looks like some of our members who are golden/pyrs. The temperament and characteristics sound pyrish. Your only absolute answer is to get DNA testing. I will give you links to websites on DNA testing. I'll give you a link to the yahoo group if you want to see our photo albums and see our golden/pyr members. You can also link from the group to our photobucket albums to see more photos of our members. One or more golden/pyr were honored on our home page in 2008, and you could look in the 2008 Background album at photobucket. Whether or not you get DNA testing depends on how important it is for you to know for SURE ... and if your budget can afford it. Your dog is lovely -!-
