Why are people so adamantly opposed to creating new breeds of dogs?
People fail to remember that most of our dog breeds were bred for purposes other than being a family pet, most were bred to perform tasks, and most were bred by mixing various other breeds to get a desired result, why do people call those that breed so called "non standard" breeds of dogs "unethical"

- You can't call something a breed after one generation. If you work on the dogs without mixing blood lines for generations and generations with as many abnormalities removed then maybe it's okay. BUT a labradoodle isn't a breed!
- Because these mix breeds you wish to keep producing are mutts, there are millions of them dying in the shelters every year because morons just keep breeding their dogs. Plus, the majority of breeders are BYB, completely irresponsible breeders that are just in it to make some money and don't care about their dogs at all.
- ok so what is the purpose of a shipoo or what ever the hell they are called???? they are not used for herding, hunting anything.. they are mutts that are bred for their stupid names and as solely house pets..Breeds created thousands of years ago were bred to work, they had a purpose...nowadays people breed mutts for profit. While thousands are killed in shelters daily. We do not need new breeds there are plenty. In no way shape or form can you compare these new breeds to existing breeds....seriously it's common sense. think about it.
- There are enough dog breeds. Creating dog breeds unscrupulously will only lead to the spread of genetic ailments. People who are "creating" dog breeds are simply carelessly mixing existing dog breeds, unbeknown to all the health issues and genetic disorders both parents have.
- I don't know about opposed but it takes a long time to breed and then have it recognised.
- Most people dont understand that creating new breeds of dog can help rid our dogs now of illnesses like parvo or other illnesses. But at the same time you have to watch the crossing of bloodlines because you could end up with a bad tempered dog.
- People who breed dogs, breed for a purpose -- to develop specific traits for a specific job and those who do spend 50+ years in the development of such breeds. It is NOT a true breed until it can produce litters that are continually consistent in look, temperament and characteristics. Maybe in 75 years a Labradoodle will be a true breed, but all these Designer Dogs are NOT true breeds and most likely will not be in our lifetimes. So ... what other than instant profit are they trying to accomplish???
- PROBABLY afraid any mix will become a breed
- To create a new breed, you need a particular purpose in mind. You also need to know enough about the breeds you plan to mix to have a good idea what each will contribute. Then you need to carefully breed the resulting mixes to hone the results, keeping detailed records over many generations so that unwanted traits and health problems can be excluded or kept to a minimum. Then the traits need to be set well enough that the new breed will breed true, that is, that all the offspring will have predictable traits re conformation, temperament, and function. Most back yard breeders don't have the knowledge to do all this, and the puppy mills don't know, don't care, or both. "Designer breeds" do not breed true; some pups will resemble the sire's breed, others will resemble the dam's breed, and others will mix the traits of both to varying degrees. These are not new breeds, they are mixes. Few if any are bred by knowledgeable people actually trying to create a new breed, but rather are bred either by fools fooling around in the back yard or by people trying to cash in on a new craze. But dogs cannot be discarded with the same impunity as pet rocks once the craze is over. "Designer breeds" are bred for fun and/or for quick cash. You can get these same mixes -- and others currently less fashionable -- at any shelter for the adoption fee, yet these breeders often charge -- and get! -- prices far higher than what ethical breeders charge for a show quality pup from the parent breeds. There are millions of lovable mutts that desperately need good homes right now. Deliberately breeding more of them is despicable.
- 1. Tell me how many of today's recognised breeds were created by breeding 2 existing breeds and calling the resultant off-spring a "new breed" with a breed name taken from half of the name of each breed, eg. Chug = Chihuahua X Pug 2. How many of these breeders creating "designer breeds" actually bother to test any of the breeding stock for genetic diseases which are prevalent in both / all the breeds going into the mix. For example Labradors are at high risk of Hip Dysplasia, as are German Shepherds, so if you crossed these 2 breeds to create a new "designer breed" the pups would be at high risk of contracting Hip Dysplasia. This is basic genetics. 3. Many breeds were not created so much by mixing existing breeds as by breeding existing types with each other. For example, dogs which excelled at shepherding (flock herding and protection) would be bred to create pups which would excel at this type of work. Eventually, after careful beeding and decades of time, a distinct type will be created with a distinct look and they will start to breed true to this type. I believe that so many of the breeders of these cross breed dogs are very unethical as they are passing them off as designer breeds and selling them for exorbitant prices considering that they haven't carried out any genetic testing on their dogs, the pups can only ever be pets (unable to be shown) and the pups have no conformity of size, shape or temperament. In addition, they take no responsibility for the future security of the pups. A reputable breeder will take back a pup they have bred at any time. The health guarantees that come with these designer dogs are not worth the paper they are written, because, quite simply, due to the lack of genetic testing, they cannot guarantee the future health of the pups. These are a few of the reasons I consider these people to be completely unethical.
- I dont see anyone actually creating a new breed? Slapping a lab and a poodle together and calling it a "labradoodle" is not creating a new breed. It takes many generations of selective breeding to create a new breed. You have to have a purpose and a goal (besides cute puppies to sell). Most of these designer mixes are just first and second generation mixes.. there's no goal or purpose behind the dogs other than a profit.. the breeders dont have a standard they are breeding towards. These "labradoodles" "puggles" "Maltidoos" and other mixes are nothing more than the same thing you can find at a shelter. Just a mutt with unpredictable traits and qualities. Its unethical to breed them when so many die in a shelter.
- There IS nothing wrong with developing a new breed, or line of dogs for a specific purpose.. It is somthing that is very common..but unseen by the average pet home.. because these dogs go into other working/purpose homes.. NOT pet homes.. Many sled dogs are NOT the Siberian husky you see in the breed ring.. but a blend of several breeds chosen for specific traits.. Many other working dogs are the same.. These dogs are selected carefully, placed carefully, are the result of carefully reaserched and planned litters.. excptional examples of each individual breed dog.. Labadoodles where origionally a not so sucessfull experiement by the seeing eye people.. "service" dog.. They selected some of the BEST Labs in the program.. with the best genetic health, and crossed them with some exptional woking and health poodles.. to combine some of the best traits of both.. They selected each breed because they where genetically disimilar to help with some of the common health concerns in each breed.. and also the traits needed for a good service dog.. Temperment, coat. size.. this was a planned program like the other working examples that is over SEVERAL generations till a "new" consitant result is achieved.. not just one cross..the final product "new" breed is achieved after SEVERAL generations.. BTW the labradoodle name came in later.. not by the seeing eye people.. unfortunalty this has been forgotten.. and many people with labs.. and poodles have decided it is easier to just breed the two.. reguardless of each parent dogs qualities.. so the pups are more expensive.. and easier to sell.. The next problem is the "designer" breeds develop for the sole purpose of breeding somthing new.. give it a name.. often the dogs are slected because of the ability to give the pups some cute name..NOTHING ELSE.. and how much they can be sold for.. there is this idea that by mixing you make a new breed on one generation.. Puggles are a really good example.. they are cute.. and that is the appeal.. the problem is.. you are breeding a very high energy breed (Beagle) with a dog with a CRAPPY structure and breathing problems.. unfotunally they also share some serious genetic health concerns.. so they show up.. The only reason they where bred.. was a accedent..some puppy mill had a litter of puppies from two unregistererd parents.. and wanted to sell them.. heck they look like mini mastiffs.. and the cuteness factor.. brought in the buyers.. add to the fact.. MOST of the designer dogs..and the dogs used are NOT health tested for the health concerns in the particular breed.. pedigress are only known as to what is on some piece of paper.. The are often bred from dogs that SHOULD not be bred for vaious reasons... they where bred for the only purpose to sell somthing with a cute name.... This is the problem.. Developing a breed takes Generations.. and years of work.. if someone is actually doing this then FINE.. but there are NOT any of these people selling these so calleddesigener dogs doing so.. Amanda
- I have no problem with some guy in the Ozarks breeding his blue tick to the neighbors red bone...because they're the best male & female hunters in the area, and hunting is a way of life for some people there. They want to create an ongoing line of good hunting dogs. The puppies will be known as coon hounds...period. If they don't hunt, they'll be killed. The ones that DO hunt well will go to family members and be used for hunting. They will not be bred to anything other than the best dog for the purpose and will never be given some damned Foo Foo name. The demand in the general public is for whatever 2 breeds create the most FoofyDoo mixed name...no other purpose. Unfortunately, this is 90% of what determines how americans buy things. IF Paris or Miley were to buy a "Teacup Shitsapoobador", 800 BYB's would be breeding them by tomorrow morning. Few breeds do what they were originally bred for. Every year people in Texas & Arkansas are trying to create a better Hog Dog. I don't care. But anyone breeding FoofyDoo Designer dogs should be banned from owning dogs all together.
