What are Breyer Horses?

Everybody suddenly started talking about these things called Breyer Horses. I know that they are some horse product, but could anybody give me a good description of what these Breyer Horses are? If so I'd be very grateful! :]

  1. Breyer horses are plastic model horses. http://www.breyerhorses.com/ If you are, or were, a horse-crazy girl of 12 or so in the last 50 years and your parents could not afford to get you a real horse, or to give you riding lessons, I can almost guarantee that you owned at least one Breyer model horse. Some of them are collectable, but you really have to be careful here. Old ones aren't necessarily valuable, since some of the models were made in large quantities for a long time, and of course if they were played with, they suffered rub marks, scratches and other damage that can severely detract from their value. If you go to eBay and search on "Breyer Horses" you'll get hundreds of listings. They sell a lot of them on eBay. If you're interested in getting involved in collecting them, there is a collector club: http://www.breyerhorsecollectors.com/ The real hard-core Breyer collectors do things like customize their horses, and participate in Breyer "horse shows," which are competitions in which collectors submit their photos of their models to be judged in "classes" just like a real horse show. You can spend a ton of money on Breyer horses if you've a mind to. There are literally dozens and hundreds of models, in multiple color schemes, with some sold in limited editions. There are also Breyer accessories-- saddles and bridles and stables and all kinds of stuff.
