Cross Breeds

Is there a way to show mixed breed dogs?

I have a wonderful puppy dog (1yrold) who would be a great show dog. But he is a mixed breed, are there ways that you can show mixed breed dogs in australia as a hobby. Do you think major dog shows will ever show mixed breed dogs? If they did start showing mixed breed dogs it would encourage more people to adopt pets rather to buy designer or pedigree breeds.

  1. i dont' think so, then there will be hundreds or thousands more breeds. what about the guideline for all the mix breeds? i just think having more promotions from the animal shelters would encourage ppl want to adpot and rescue animals.
  2. the companion show, usually held to raise money for shelters are another cause, A good day out and a lot of fun
  3. The only way that i know you can compete with a dog that is not a purebred is in obedience or agility, some states even for obedience the dog has to be pedigreed, QLD for instance i have a pure rotty who is not papered and I couldn't trial her, sucks huh.
  4. I dont know. by a family tree maybe?
  5. i know where i come from in the UK they have A dog show just for mixed breeds every year called scruffs and the classes are beautiful coat / waggiest tail and quite a few other classes
  6. I'm not sure about the rules in Australia, but I'd suspect that you can't show mixes in conformation, because there is no standard for them. Conformation shows were developed for evaluating breeding stock. However, in many countries it is possible to show mixed breeds in performance events like obedience and agility. Find a good obedience or agility club in your area and they should be able to tell you if this is the case where you are, and how to go about it.
  7. Shelters, stores, and various pet organizations will hold 'companion' or 'housepet' shows, or will organize a pet dog ring at a real dog show. You have to try to find them though, they're not usually well advertised. You have to be careful though, while some people might take it as a reason to adopt homeless mixed breeds, some unethical people might take it as further encouragement to BREED those dogs on purpose. Don't forget that the dog show is not a beauty pageant. It's intended to show that a dog is close to it's breed standard and is fit to breed. What would be the point of showing a mixed breed dog? You shouldn't be breeding it, and there is no breed standard, so what would winning mean? You should consider using your wonderful pet to show people how appealing mixed breeds are in other ways- what about doing some advanced obedience, flyball, dancing, agility, etc? You can prove that a mixed breed is an amazing dog and just as capable of doing those activities as a purebred. Plus, it's much easier to get your mix into those events than a conformation show.
  8. No there is not unless you want to do agility or tracking. Then you can compete. The reason that you cannot show mixed breeds is that shows are for the best example of each breed, they follow a certain standard for these animals. A mixed breed does not have a standard as there can be great variations in animals of mixed breeds. You can have a gsd x rotti that looks mainly like a gsd, or one that looks more like a rotti or one that looks like neither. If you want to get into showing get a purebred papered animal through a registered breeder. If you don;t widh to do that, join an obedience club and learn adn teach your dog agility or obedience so that you can get the titles.
