Has the FDA lifted the ban on the sale, movement and relocation of prairie dogs?

Has the U S Government lifted the ban on prairie dogs? Haysoos2, You are right about the USDA, however four years ago because of a health consern over an outbreak of monkeypox the FDA stepped in and placed the ban.

  1. I'm not familiar with US laws, but the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) wouldn't have jurisdiction over prairie dog sales. That would likely be the USDA (US Department of Agriculture). UPDATE: Cool. I didn't know about the monkeypox thing. Thanks. Up here, all our prairie dogs were wiped out by the settlers, and so we don't have any at all anymore. :(
  2. yes
  3. I'd be more concerned with violating state laws. Check with your state fish and game (wildlife, natural resources, game and parks, whatever) agency. One phone call could save you a lot of grief. Here in Arizona, prairie dogs are frequently carriers of plague, so the authorities usually take a dim view of relocation.
