Who was the greatest European/English racehorse of all time?

We've had the question of who is the best racehorse ever, and the answers seemed to me to be centered around American horses. But some of the greatest racehorses of the twentieth century raced in England or the continent: undefeated champions Nearco and Ribot and Sea-Bird; Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, Allez France and Dahlia, Vaguely Noble and Hyperion, and many, many more. So who do you rate as the best of "across the pond," and why?

  1. Why not look even further back in history? Eclipse is an interesting option: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_(horse)
  2. From and Australian breeding point of view, i have to say Nearco. Nearco is the sire of Nasrullah and Nearctic which feature dominantly in australian pedigrees. Nasrullah being the sire of the great Grey Soveriegn. Nearctic is the sire of Northern Dancer, who is the sire of Saddler's Wells, and Nijinsky 2 amongst many other. Another point from the 85 acceptances for the Melbournce Cup 72 of them are descandants of Nearco! With only Carbine and the Darley arab being related to more acceptances, well are related to all of the acceptances. All the NZ lines go back to GB and USA
  3. American racehorses???? actually more great racehorses are bred in australia or new zealand like pharlap, makybe diva had all her races here sunline, lonhro, octagonal.
  4. Without any doubt it would be Kinscem. Here is her information. Kinscem Combuscan - Waternymph Foaled 1874 Liver Chestnut Mare Runs: 54 Wins: 54 Earned: Unknown Form: 1111111111 - 11111111111111111 - 111111111111111 - 111111111111 Big Race Wins 2000 Guineas (Hungary) 1000 Guineas (Hungary) Spring Oaks (Hungary) Autumn Oaks (Hungary) (1877, 1878, 1879) St Leger (Hungary) Derby (Austria) Goodwood Cup (England) Grand Prix de Deauville (France) Grosser Preis von Baden (Germany) (1877, 1878, 1879) Who? Kinscem (whose name means "my Treasure" in Hungarian) was a 19th Century wonder horse, who won all 54 of her races in five different countries between 1876 and 1879. She was bred at the Kisber Stud which was founded in 1853. Following her incredible achievements she was entered into the Guinness Book of Records. That puts your Cigar & Citation's streak of a mere 16 consecutive wins into the shade huh Jen?! She even has a racecourse in her home country of Hungary named after her; Kinscem Park, obviously.
  5. It's very difficult to compare different generations with each other and even more difficult when people go back to the likes of Eclipse but if you follow the theory that thoroughbreds are getting better (just like human athletes) then we shouldn't forget about horses we've seen over the past two decades. The greatest horses I've seen in my lifetime are Dayjur and Peintre Celebre. You may remember Dayjur in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Sprint when he fly leapt a shadow and it cost him the race. He was unbeatable over 5 and 6 furlongs in Europe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GwarAwadn0 Peintre Celebre won the 1997 Arc and in doing so beat as good an Arc field assembled for years. He demolished the likes of Pilsudski (a multiple Group 1 winner including subsequent Japan Cup victor) by 5 lengths in course record time. Also behind him that day were the likes of Swain and Helissio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUCMCUi_KCA
