looking for a movie, don't no the name! help!?

I've always remembered this movie from back when I was young (going back 20 odd years). I used to sit down and watch it over and over and over. But theres only one part of the movie I can remember now. The sorry is based on sled dogs in a race.....yes in snow) and at the end of the movie coming up to the finishing line the good guy whose racing against another guy, something happens. Not sure if the dogs were sick or if the guy was hurt, but meters from the finishing line they collapse and loss the race. It's not a cartoon movie, its a family movie. I need more information on the movie! and a name! can any recall a ,movie that ends in this way??? help?
