What movie/book is this?

The grandpa is ill in this book. It's in Alaska, and the boy staying with him takes care of him, and enters a snow dog sledding race to win money to pay for his medicine so that the grandpa can get better. Throughout the movie and book they consider taking the young boy somewhere else to live but he shows them that him and the grandpa have a sort of sign language.
