Do thoroughbreds exsist that haven't been raced?

I'm looking into buying a horse for hunter/jumpers. I do like Thoroughbreds alot but it appears that every TB that I see on dreamhorse or equine.com are x-race horses. I'm really not interested in a retired race horse because I've been down that route before. But I suppose my question is, are all TB's X-race horses?

  1. no not all are ex-race horses. you just have to know where to look, and be looking at the right time!
  2. Yup, some were bred for racing but never were raced and things like that. Like the previous poster said, you just have to look often/at the right time Good luck :-)
  3. there are definatly. like loggy said - you have to know where to look.
  4. Some people breed TBs and don't race them, whether that be on purpose because they're like you and want them as performance horses, or because they're too slow or have an ailment of some kind. They're out there, they're just in the minority. Try searching for "unraced TB" or just "unraced". For example: http://equine.com/horses/search_results.aspx?title=unraced&breed_ids=57 Good luck! :-)
  5. Yes. You can look at tbs on equine.com. they have horses there from across the country so you can find one in your area. I reccomend getting a warmblood for hunter/jumper though becauase tbs can be a bit spooky.
  6. Some don't end up the way they were "supposed to" when they were bred, so are never raced. It does seem like the thoroughbreds are all in racing, though.
  7. My first foal was a TB and it NEVER crossed my mind to race him. He spent his whole life as a hunter/hack. One of my former students bought a TB filly as a yearling an she's NEVER seen the track (She's working on getting her going pleasure and maybe some small fences.). There are LOTS of them out there, you just have to search them out.
  8. Of course they do! You just have to be persistent. If you're using a website, use keywords such as unraced, or never raced. Many are out there, just keep looking! Hope I helped!
  9. nope. i've got a colt waiting for me in colarado and he's not being raced.
  10. TB's are excellent jumpers. They are very athletic. There are some ex-racehorses that were too slow for the racetrack that can make excellent jumping horses. Keep looking. There are some TB's that were bred speficically for hunter-jumper. Try another website. I don't like warmbloods anyway. They are too lazy and gigantic. TB's are hands-down the best jumpers.
  11. No of course not. That is like saying all quarter horses are western horses. It might be a little harder to find one that hasn't been raced for cheaper but it could take a lot of time to find the right one. Thoroughbreds are mainly raced and then retired and sold to a home to re-train them. Those are the cheaper ones. The Thoroughbreds that have been trained H/J since birth are more expensive as I said above. Check local tack ship bulletin boards, newspapers, etc. You may find one then. You could also find one at a local TB breeding farm if there are any around you. It also depends how much you are willing to pay. Good luck and excellent breed choice!
  12. What do you like about thoroughbreds so much? If you really want a thoroughbred, go straight to the tracks. It is extremely common for 3 year olds to have their first racing test and fail, than they sold to the slaughter house - maybe you could rescue one and get it trained up by a pro?
  13. TB's overall are sporty horses... so there's a lot of people who breed them as horses for sports like cross country or jumping... there are a lot of Ex-racers because that's the biggest thoroughbred sport... but they are bred and used for other things as well. You just have to know where to look to find a non-racing thoroughbred. good luck ♥
  14. no
  15. not all make it to the race tack, not all are breed for the race track, so not all are X-race horses. edit: i do believe that these horses were not on the track: http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/classifieds/ad299838 http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/classifieds/ad303264 http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/classifieds/ad303865 http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/classifieds/ad299649
  16. There are quite a lot of Thoroughbreds in my area that have never raced. It is tougher finding a TB that hasn't had time on the track, but not impossible. You just have to look around a lot and know where to look. You can try finding a farm that specifically breeds thoroughbreds for disciplines other then racing such has jumping, dressage, hunters, etc. I think you'll have a better chance of finding what you're looking for if you go with that. These horses will more than likely be on the expensive side, especially in comparison to the ex-racers, but if you have the money and need a horse you KNOW is sound, safe and off to a good start in your preferred discipline it is well worth it.
  17. No, not all are. I used to ride one that was trained as a jumper from the start.
  18. no. there are a fair share of companion and other TB! Hope I helped...!
  19. yep i used to lease one. a lot of thoroughbreds race but not all of them. you really should keep in mind though that some ex-racehorses are actually calm and very good horses. some of them didnt do well racing and they arent all extremely hot and extremely fast.
  20. no....... i just bought a TB and she is not raced... i also do hunters and jumpers ( mostly jumpers, level 5 ) go to centralequine.com they have some really good jumpers/hunters
  21. Hey... the only sure fire way you can get a tb that hasnt raced (as alot of people will lie) is to buy a yearling straight from the breeder... and then either break it yourself or send it to a hunter/jumper breaker, this will be an expensive exersice... but it will garantee you have a great tb for a great purpose. In saying that... because of all the breeding in tb's, even a totally unraced never been to a race track tb will be inclinded to pull, bolt and run fast... its in their nature, i have a tb i bought of a breeder who is just a race horse... it doesnt matter that he has only ever had dressage training, he just instintivly feels the need to act like a re-tard and pull when ever i let him stretch out... tb's make great hunter/jumpers, you just need to get one with the right attitude and personalitiy to suit you. good luck with your quest, the perfect horse is out there for you, dont settle for the wrong horse, it will just be more heartache in the end best wishes
  22. Yes there are non racers outhere .look locally or you could talk to ppl and they might know someone who is selling one. If that doesnt work expand your search it is just how far u are willing to go
  23. Go to a Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale find your future Hunter there. I would go to the sales catalog online and find your prospects first and go to the sale prepared. I have seen lots of yearlings going for quite low prices but still are fine horses, just not what the racers are looking for.
