Do wild horses really go after tame mares?

I was wondering if in real life, a herd of wild horses travel for miles looking to steal a mare from her stable, owned by someone else? Or does that only happen on tv?

  1. This probably happened in the old west days, mustangs were notorious in doing this, which is why many people back then saw them as a problem. Did you see this from like the saddle club series, i laughed at the Gypsy episode, the series is funny, I loved the books though.
  2. It's likely that it happened at some point. This sounds like a scene from The Man from Snowy River. I love that movie. :)
  3. It does happen in some places still. There are problems with wild stallions coming around people's ranches on the outskirts of town here in Wyoming looking for a new herd.
  4. It still happens in Utah too. When I lived there...there is a place called Skull Valley...and it has ranches and wild horse herds too. Friend of mine lost a mare in season when the stallion tore down the fence to get to her. Just herded her out...[they guess]...and she was gone.
  5. Only on TV in Australia, most of the infamous Australian Wild Brumby horses have been shot out by helicopters in the mountains (Where they were once extremely plentiful), now there are only large populations in the outback.
