Cross Breeds

What are some of the oldest breeds of dogs?

I'm interested in knowing what some of the oldest and most original dog breeds are.

  1. Many of the sighthounds, including the greyhound, Saluki.
  2. I can't speak for other breeds, but I know Pugs are dated back to 300BC
  3. I believe a few of the oldest breeds are Ibizan Hounds, Pharoh hounds, Salukis, Greyhounds....all in the sighthound family.
  4. Siberian Husky, Afghan hound, Chow Chow, Shar Pei, Saluki, Akita Inu...
  5. Well, I do know that the Samoyed is most like the primitive, original dog, as there is no wolf or fox mix in the Samoyed. And these are the 4 "ancient" dog breeds, which most of today's are descended from or relate too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_dog_breeds
  6. That's a really interesting question. I found this article in Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_dog_breeds Now I have read previous articles that have stated the DNA of the Tibetan breeds (which look like mops) actually have the closest DNA to the wolf.
  7. pug
  8. The Samoyed is generally thought to be the oldest breed that remains true to its origins. Some other old breeds are the Chow Chow, Afghan Hound, Saluki, Alaskan Malamute and Laika (a siberian working dog).
