Does anyone know of a school to get a license to handle and house wild and domestic animals bought as pets?

The premise behind this is to give people something to do with there animals instead of uthanizing them, abandoning them, or putting them in the pound. I'm looking into starting a sanctuary for domestic and wild animals. But obviously the law prohibits you from just "owning" wild animals. So I want to do the process the right way without cutting any corners. If anyone can help me please let me know.

  1. I don't know what kind of schooling is required, but the best place to pose this question is with your state's department of wildlife protection or fish and wildlife division, etc. Also, make sure you check your town's laws on that sort of thing. It'll be hard as heck to run something like that from your home, legally. Please know that this is a serious undertaking. My friend runs a rescue and she's sacrificed SO much time and money, and the job is a very taxing, dirty, and thankless one. The thing you're describing sounds like a regular sanctuary. Maybe you could work for one, instead of running a separate one. I'm saying this because starting one is awful hard and can be very expensive. Getting funding is ridiculously difficult, especially in these times of economic hardship. I'm of the school that most injured wild animals would be better off euthanized. Not to say that many rescues do wonderful things, but... Let me give you an example: There is a bird rescue that I visit and donate to. Several of the birds there are seriously messed up and can't fly, see, etc. They give them huge cages, but when you see them in those cages, just sitting there... It's never going to be as good as being wild. If I had the option, I'd have euthanized the birds humanely instead of putting them in the cages. The upside is that they use funding to protect other wild birds and help educate the public about their cause. If you're seriously considering this, it won't be easy. You have a lot of reading, research, and inquiring ahead of you. It's possible, but it's not for everyone. Thanks for wanting to help animals, instead of exploiting them! Good luck.
