I have a Wolf dog, we moved from Florida 2 Illinois. Now that it's cold & snow the fur on his paw pads is red.
What would cause this , it's not dirt, or iron .

- I dont know for sure but my first reaction to this question is that there are tons of chemicals used in big cities ( I'm in one too!) to de - ice the streets and driveways and these chemicals could be responsible for the different coloration in the fur. Make sure that you prep the dog for this weather by trimming the fur around the toes so it doesnt form snow and ice and cling to the feet. Also, use paw wax or bag balm to protect the paw pads from cracking. The ice and snow mixed with these de - icing chemicals is bad for their feet. You can buy pet friendly products to de - ice your own driveway and walk online. You could also invest in dog boots but I havent heard anyone yet who has said they are working for them. Hope this helps...
- well he can be bleeding from the cold air and ground. put some gauze or wrap up his feet so they don't bleed easily from the snow.
- White coat stains to a red color when it is constantly wet. Snow = constantly wet feet. Saliva can make the problem worse, so if the dog is licking the snow (pulling snoballs) out of the fur, or licking salt used to melt the snow that may have gotten into the foot, the coat will stain.
