Which snow coat is best for my 2 dogs?

We are moving to Saint Sauveur Canada with our 6 month golden retriever and Yorkshire Terrier. People over there have been telling me my dogs needs to wear a coat and boots. I have checked out muttluk boots and they seem good but would appreciate input. I have also found the following coats/bodysuits http://www.k9topcoat.com/product.asp?specific=96 http://www.k9topcoat.com/product.asp?specific=103 We are moving from the Netherlands and we haven't experienced a winter yet with our golden, but the Yorkie mostly stays in. Any input would be greatly appreciated

  1. they both look ok so i guess it comes down to price in which case it would be the first one and i like the print best. as far as the colour goes i would be inclined to go for a bright colour or contrasting colour to the dog. the second one which is a little more expensive could be warmer but you would need to take care that you don't overheat your dog. sorry not much help. good luck.
  2. The "people over there" are FULL OF CRAP! Dogs do NOT need clothes.
  3. OK. This is NOT gospel but.......dogs are like people. They are all individuals with different needs. Certain breeds are able to handle cold and heat differently. For example, boxers are neither very heat or cold tolerant but Australian shepherds are both. That being said, since I'm not familiar with that particular location in Canada, the Yorkie is the one that is going to need to be watched closely. Getting a "coat" for that one would be wise to have just in case. Boots I wouldn't think are needed. The Lab is a tough breed. They are bred to swim and retrieve waterfowl in inclement weather and that includes freezing temperatures. Good luck.
  4. The Golden doesn't need anything. His natural coat will grow in to protect him from the weather. Keep the Yorkie inside during cold weather, except for potty breaks. Any type of coat or sweater will be fine for those short periods. Most dogs hate boots. Try Musher's Secret instead, it's a wax compound that you apply to the pads of their feet. It prevents them from getting too cold or icy while they are outside.
  5. ohhh, those coats are so ugly!!! Wait till you get here till you buy the coats, all our pet stores sell them. They look a lot better than those ones do. Most of the good ones are a fleece lined nylon, that you close up with velcro to adjust to the dog, easy to put on. And yes, some dogs do need coats here. It's only October, and my pointer is shivering all the time now. As to boots, or Musher's secret, either is fine, they protect from ice and snow yes, but in Canada, we use a lot of road salt, and you really have to use something for that.
