- One big inference that is made from the skulls of extinct critters is their diet. By studying the morphology and placement of the teeth of a fossil, paleontologists use inference to reconstruct the potential diet of the extinct critter. Another would be inferences about intelligence, and thus complexity of social behaviour and activity levels, based on the relative size of the brain case.
- The type of teeth in the skull/jaw would indicate that the animal was either a meat eater (cutting teeth), or a plant eater (grinding teeth), or an ominvore (cutting and grinding teeth). The size of the cranium (the part of the skull that would have contained the brain) would provide some indication of the level of intelligence of the animal. The size and shape of the nasal area would give some indication about the animal's ability to smell. The size, shape and location in the skull of the eye sockets would give information about its eye sight. Hope this helps you. Best wishes and good luck.
