What do I need to know to breed sea horses?
What do I need to know to breed seahorses? Like what types of seahorses are best to keep? Do I need like a small plastic clear box to hold the babies? What would eat the babies? How can I tell between male and female? Please tell me all I need to know about them and things to watch out for. Thanks! Yes I have kept a salt water tank before I still have it, its 220 gallons and I have two other saltwater tanks and the water is already cycled.

- what do you need to know to breed seahorses? well for starters you could know how to breed seahorses.. lol joking aside this isn't an easy undertaking (especially if you hope to RAISE the young after wards) from what i can see you're not too familar with them (or SW fishkeeping in general, or fish breeding in general) i would suggest reading up on and keeping much easier saltwater fish to begin with.. keeping seahorses alive is enough of a struggle EDIT: you wouldn't want to breed them in a 220 anyway.. there's no way of monitoring them in that large a tank
- if you don't know how to tell a male from a female, you have a lot to learn just about keeping seahorses, let alone how to breed them have you ever kept any kind of saltwater tank before? i'd say to do that before you try seahorses because seahorses are harder to keep than most of the other saltwater fish. have you even kept a freshwater tank? how'd that go? did you always do 25% water changes every week, or did you let things go sometimes? were you able to keep the fish alive and did they breed and could you raise their fry? if you can't breed fish like danios or bettas or tetras, you won't be able to take care of seahorse fry. if it sounds like I'm being mean here, I'm not trying to do that, I just want you to know that just keeping seahorses is hard enough, and they're expensive, about $60 each or more. plus, you have to set up a saltwater tank and maintain it. saltwater is great, I have two tanks myself, but it takes time and money to do it right. and lots of research because there are different kinds of seahorses, and lots of people are able to get them to breed, but very few can keep the babies alive. and these are people who have been keeping them for years. if you want to read about seahorses and see how much they cost, look up Ocean Rider's website on the net, or seahorse.org. they have a lot of stuff on keeping seahorses, so you can see I'm telling you the truth, they aren't the easiest animals to keep, let alone breed.
- have a male and a female and wait.
- cool you got sea horses thats awesome
